I rented that game once.
"Once" being the operative word.

Over on his Flophouse Plays channel, he's been riffing the USA Street Fighter animated series. This week is...the Final Fight episode.

If he wasn't, Gary Chalk should have been Haggar in that episode.

{Spoiler}{Spoiler}We have a new worst and this one might be impossible to ever top. Holy hell. I know he spent most of his venom on the SNES port, but I was surprised to see him so hard on the arcade version as well. I remember that being an arcade classic back in the day.

The arcade game was good for what it was back in the day, but it's also very much a pre-SF2 fighter. Hasn't aged gracefully at all.

{Spoiler}We have a new worst and this one might be impossible to ever top. Holy hell. Not gonna lie, I did spit takes at both the "He's fat!" and "I'm not normal" soundbites. My grandfather picked up the SNES version of Pit Fighter at a yard sale back in the day for like £2. US import copy, too, and probably within a year or so of release, so it likely cost the original owner a hefty chunk of change. I suspect the original owner was a fan of the arcade game and had a colossal case of buyer's remorse. Needless to say, I played it for about five minutes and then never let it near my SNES again.

I mean look, I know people will dunk on Pit Fighter all day, every day. But the original arcade game was released before Street Fighter 2. Before the fighting game standard was etched in stone. How was Atari supposed to know the fighting game future? Besides, it may have aged horribly, but I will gladly play a round of Pit Fighter. The digitized graphics, Genesis-esque soundtrack, and the early 90s attitude just tugs at my heart strings.
The Genesis port... was pretty good for the time. I'd argue it plays a little better than the arcade. It also gets a pass.
SNES port... good F'N grief. I know people crap on Acclaim or LJN during the NES/SNES era for what they put out. THQ during this era was just as bad, if not worse. The Wayne's World games and Rocky & Bullwinkle games make the worst LJN games look like modern art. SNES Pit Fighter is absolute trash. There is no excuse. Why is it missing half the fighters? Why is it missing the weapons? The cut scenes? The 90s era HUD? Almost all the mechanics? The babes to congraulate you winning? It feels like a game in VERY early Beta. It's shocking how bad it is. Hell, I know there are 8 bit computer ports (ZX Spectrum, Amstrad) that may be technically worse. But at least they have the cinematics. Most of the mechanics. The weapons. It even has a better soundtrack. And these are 8 bit machines. What excuse does the SNES port have besides THQ probably farming it out to the least talented folks of the team?
I have no qualms with the SNES port being The Worst Fighting Game. It's bloody awful. It makes Criticom look like SF3: Third Strike. I don't see SNES Pit Fighter being knocked off its perch for a long time.

Even as a kid I quickly realised that THQ made nothing but garbage, to the point where even when they started putting out consistently good titles in the mid-'00s I couldn't believe it.

I had the GB version of Pit Fighter and played it all the way through, it was abysmal, but I only had three games so I made the most of it. I think it's telling that in an era where Shaq Fu and Bubsy got a remake, Double Dragon got a redemption sequel nobody is pushing for more Pit Fighter. There is no nostalgia for it, even misplaced.
