I would've gone with Goemon Ishikawa, or Kotaro Fuma given the rumors he killed Hanzo Hattori who was Ieyasu's top General.

Hattori Hanzo was a member of the Assassins (in fact he was one of the Japanese Brotherhood's Master Assassins) so if he's in this game, he's probably an ally, not a target. Tokugawa Ieyasu is also an ally of the Brotherhood if not an Assassin himself. The Japanese Brotherhood supported the Tokugawa Shogunate until its dissolution during the Meiji Restoration. Emperor Meiji was unwittingly a puppet of the Templars. Speaking of Templars, the Order infiltrated Japan via Jesuit priests that went there as missionaries. Since Yasuke originally served the Jesuits before going over to Nobunaga, I wonder if he starts out as an idealistic Templar who gets disillusioned with the Order and switches sides. Maybe he's tasked with getting Nobunaga (who was at least one point a loose ally of the Assassins) to convert to the Templar ideology before that. I also noticed that Naoe's hidden blade has a swiveling handle like Connor's. Wonder if this means we can finally use the hidden blade in melee combat again.
And since I've already seen some whining about not having Assassins and Templars, this is in the late 1500's where the Hidden Ones and Order of the Ancients have firmly been re-established as the Assassins and Templars. And both the Assassins and Templars have established themselves in Japan by the time of this game. I'm also guessing that any remnants of the Order of the Ancients in China or Japan have either been integrated into the Templars or purged by this time.

I think it's pretty cool having two separate characters with different playstyles. Barring any Ubisoft stupidity, I'll definitely give Shadows a playthrough. That said, can we get to the f***ing point with the current day/Isu stuff? Valhalla made... more progress, but if we're going to have it, it'd be cool to like, get to something. That reminds, it’s been a couple months now, I should finally finish Valhalla. Put 70-80+ hours in and just mentally hit a wall and my desire to finish it absolutely plummeted. I just completely stopped caring how the story turned out, which is a problem I never came close to hitting with Odyssey. Main story and DLC I think I put around 130 hours in and gladly would’ve spent more

Apparently, AC Shadows' world map will be about as big as Origins' Egypt. Still really big, but not as sprawling as Odyssey, AC4, or Valhalla.
They're also going to focus on vertical geography a lot too. Like making the mountains feel huge. Wonder if Fuji will be in the game.

Another connection with Osaka that I forgot about and why that teaser image with the hourglass was in Osaka, and it's a likely connection with the present day storyline. The modern day branch of the Assassins is based out of Osaka, who also operate a faction of Yakuza in the city called the Onmoraki-Gumi. Kiyoshi Takakura from the Layla arc was a member of both.

I love Odyssey, and as beautiful as the map is it does feel empty in places.

Valhalla is too big, both in scope of the map and just... in general. Origins' Egypt was the right size.

AC Odyssey's Greece map was 256 square km with the seas, 130 square km with just landmass. Origins' Egypt map was about 80 square km; 92 with the DLC areas added. And for comparison's sake, Valhalla's England map was 94 square km (120 with the sea added). Though Valhalla's maps were pretty separated between Norway, England, Vinland, Asgard, and Jotunheim so the total landmass might be larger than Odyssey's if you put them altogether. That doesn't even include the DLC areas like Ireland, France, etc.

*Article on the BBC talking about why it took so long for a game to be set in Japan*
Me: China, That's why. Idiots execs at Ubisoft where futilely courting a market where console gaming is banned and a government that's hostile to your supposed pro-LGBT sensibilities and will censor such content.

They hate this game already!" Japan: *Buys so many pre-orders of the regular and special edition that the game is already occupying multiple spots at the top of the PS5 and Amazon charts*

The other response from Japanese gamers is wondering why there hadn't been a game with Yasuke as the protagonist before this because he's really interesting.
Now I'm not buying AC Shadows because f*** Ubisoft and I will never buy another game from them but I do hope that Shadows succeeds just because it will be another failure in the culture wars.
edit: Probably the reason why Yasuke is the male protag is because we don't know much about him after the fall of Nobunaga. Meanwhile popular ninjas like Kotaro and Goemon we already know how they died and what happened.
I guess it would be like if they set a game during the Three Kingdoms era and made your character a lesser known outsider instead of a bigwig from one of the Kingdoms, we already know what happened to most of the generals.

So far preorders have been very strong.
