#22 Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
I really think the 2010 Planet of the Apes trilogy is criminally underappreciated. I really enjoyed them all when they came out and I recently rewatched them all and they totally hold up. Andy Serkis doesn't get nearly enough recognition for his portrayal of Caesar.
This latest entry is set centuries after the time of Caesar and it's really interesting to see how Caesar and his lessons have been remembered (or forgotten). The plot is the basic Hero's Journey 101, but it's done well enough and the characters and world are enjoyable to spend time with.
If you enjoyed the previous Ape movies, definitely check it out. And if you haven't watched the previous Ape movies yet, go watch them!
VERDICT: Not as good as the high points of the previous trilogy but still very enjoyable and certainly good enough to make me interested in what seems like an inevitable sequel.

#23 Perfect Days
This movie follows the life of Hirayama as he spends his days working as a janitor for Tokyo's public toilets. That's the entire movie. We spend the duration watching our main character, wake up, do his work, go about his very ordinary life and go to bed. That's it really.
You could very easily watch this movie and say "Nothing happens", and in a way you'd be right. Hirayama's life is very unexciting and rigidly routined but amidst the mundanity, we regularly see true joy from Hirayama. He enjoys his chosen uncomplicated life and appreciates the little things like his favourite cassettes and the sight of light streaking through the leaves of trees.
VERDICT: An extremely understated movie exploring how true happiness can be found even in the most simple of lives.

75. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) - Watched this on DVD. (Takes deep breath) The first thing I have to say is that I have heard my share of negative feedback surrounding this film. Of course, I am not sure if it's solely because it is a remake or because it is not a good film, because despite what some people may believe, there are some decent, if good remakes out there (For example, "The Fly).
In regards to horror (or slasher) remakes, especially those from the 2000s to sometime in the early-2010s (I'm leaving out the 2019 "Child's Play" because one, I haven't seen it, and two, that was released much later). I have enjoyed the "Friday the 13th" remake. I recall enjoying the 2000s "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" films as different takes, but in all fairness, I have not all of the other films. Regarding Rob Zombie's "Halloween" films, they have grown on me and I have defended them. Not to mention that the theatrical cuts of those films kind of improve on things. However, this one has gotten the short end of the stick, and with good reason.
Regarding the positives, I won't knock Jackie Earle Haley in his portrayal as Freddy Krueger. I don't think he was trying to emulate Robert Englund as it felt like he gave it his own spin on the character. Regarding the makeup job, well, I am mostly mixed on it. I get that he was supposed to look more like a burn victim this time around, but some of the makeup did not look right.
There were some bits in the story that I could give credit towards. While I did not like the change in Freddy's backstory (I will get into more of that; Yes, I have heard that was how his original backstory was until it was changed), I found it interesting how Freddy had more of a body count than what was shown in the movie to give the viewers a glimpse into what this version was capable of. Some of the kills weren't so bad, either.
As for the negatives, oh boy. There were plenty of issues surrounding Freddy's backstory in this one. I think it would have worked better if Freddy was a falsely-accused innocent man who wanted revenge, but no, that's not where they went. When I watched the "Hack the Movies" episode on this film, they had a valid point that maybe the screenwriter knocked off that Simpsons "Treehouse of Horror" episode when it spoofed "A Nightmare on Elm Street" with Freddy not only being a groundskeeper, but also getting burned alive and going after the kids. I could see it now.
Also, Rooney Mara did not look like she wanted to be there when she did this film. She did not even try to give off a decent, let alone good performance. Plus, I didn't buy the chemistry between her and Kyle Gallner. I didn't believe those two liked each other as the movie tried to tell us towards the end. Plus, some of the visual effects did not look too good in some areas.
Overall, I just did not feel this film. While I saw some redeeming factors, the rest of it couldn't keep my interest.

#202 - The Place Beyond the Pines (Apple)
*1st Viewing
I always looked at this being 2+ hours and thinking "oh boy" but the fact that it's basically three shorter stories that come together made it flow smoothly. I was engaged throughout, the pacing is good, and the performances are top notch. [****]
#203 - Madame Web (Netflix)
*1st Viewing
While it is objectively awful, it is in the funniest way possible. I guarantee if I ever watch this again, it's for comedic purposes whereas stuff like Aquaman 2 (while better) will never be viewed again because it's dull. [*]

179. Thanksgiving (2023) - Eli Roth is usually hit or miss with me, I am leaning more towards hit but I really enjoyed this, felt like I got entirely what I expected going into this and that's not a bad thing.
180. Queen of the Damned (2002) - this really didn't do much for me overall
181. The Last Starfighter (1984) - I used to watch this as a kid but been long enough that was plenty of parts. I really enjoyed this just like I did when I was a kid.
182. Johnny Got His Gun (1971) - Great film. Some of the performances aren't so great but doesn't detract from anything.
183. Bring it On: In it To Win It (2007) - the first BIO is great this just felt a little flat.

This movie is obsessed with plot twists, is ridiculously horny, and is super problematic but it's also weirdly kinda fun. [**½]

76. Civil War (2024) - Saw this in theaters. I remember hearing about this when my cousin told me about it. I recall seeing trailers that depict battles taking place, as well as that infamous line, "What kind of American are you?" But with this being an A24 film, I knew what kind of film I would get. Not to mention that people online were disappointed with what kind of film they got rather than what they expected.
As a journalist, I was able to relate to this film. No, there was no political ideology in this film. No one knows who the heroes and villains are. However, what is shown is the anarchy of being in the middle of a war, especially with the journalists covering the events. It also shows what people have to deal with when in such a situation. With all of that said, the cinematography was great, and it had an interesting story to go with it.
I was also impressed with Kirsten Dunst's performance. She really felt like someone who is war-torn and has "seen it all." Some of the violence felt really suspenseful and I felt the danger some of the characters endured.
I must say this, though. Despite my praise, if you're going into this expecting an action thriller or a movie about "Red vs. Blue" with a bias, you will be disappointed.

So far, it's my favorite action film of the year. Ryan Gosling is phenomenal in this.

69. The Three Stooges in Orbit (1962) 70. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) 71. Wagons East! (1994)Latest YouTube find and, man, was this a hard sit. I was ready to walk away like seven minutes in. For those not familiar, this is one of John Candy's last movies, and he actually passed away on set during its filming. It was also one of the last movies produced by Carolco Pictures, known for making some of the biggest action movies of the day, including the original Rambo trilogy and T2. While their collapse in the mid-90's is largely (and not inaccurately) credited to Cutthroat Island, I can't imagine this movies dismal box office did anything to help matters. But yeah, the movie is horrible. Candy plays a drunken and traumatized Old West wagon master leading a group of settlers looking to return to St. Louis after finding the Wild West a little too wild for them. Candy really tries his best to elevate the material he's given, but it's to no avail. It's not helped by the fact that he genuinely looks horrible physically through this whole thing and his death during filming becomes much less surprising. The story is a mess, with unlikable characters, bad jokes and a disconnected plot. I'm not sure how much Candy's death actually affected the plot but there are several scenes where you can tell there was an obvious stand-in being used. Just a really bad movie for the man to go out on.

#208 - She Came To Me (Hulu)
*1st Viewing
This movie doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. It combines the story of a composer overcoming writer's block by having an affair, a psychiatrist who wants to become a nun, and a romance between an 18 and 16 year old, while not feeling at all cohesive. Actors were solid though. [**]

131. SPECIES III (2004) I watched the fourth film by mistake (They abandoned the numbering and called it Species: Awakening or some nonsense), so I thought I should complete the set now that part three is on Tubi.
That was also a mistake. It's very slow and dull. It wants to try something different, but doesn't pull it off. An overlong long bummer.
132. THE WOMAN IN BLACK (2012) Part of Daniel Ratcliffe's "I'm not Harry Potter anymore!" tour was this Hammer Horror production that I never watched because I didn't know it was Hammer Horror related (Does it show a bias that I watched it the night I found out it was?).
It's well done Hammer style, but I'd appreciate if there wasn't so many daggone loud noise jump scares. One literally frightened my poor cat. Just maximum BE SCARED screams at random points.
133. KILLER BODY COUNT (2024) A Tubi original directed by the woman behind the Slumber Party Massacre remake that still has some of the vibes of that movie as it picks on 80s slashers (but decidedly less meta). A young woman sneaks off to make out with her boyfriend, but he's so premature that she's not even out of her shirt by the time he's done and, worse yet, the janitor finds them so she gets busted for sex she never had and sent to a "teach them it's bad" religious camp that is out to make her a good girl by any means necessary.
I mean, it's the type of movie where characters say "Is she the Final Girl?" and then have a conversation about how they thought there was one last person to be admitted to the roster.
Not as good as the SPM film (I assume Tubi budgets will do that to you) but there are a few good CGI deaths, good jokes, and an absurdly fun last line.
134. THE LONG GOODBYE (1973) Robert Altman directed Phillip Marlowe noir movie with a mumbling Elliott Gould casually cruising through the incidents while Private Detective-ing.
Another good ending/ending line. I need to find more detective stuff.
135. COPYCAT (1995) Random Hulu Rewatch for some Sigourney Weaver/Holly Hunter goodness in this pre-major technology serial killer thriller. Harry Connick Jr is essentially Ernest P Worrell, Serial Killer in this.

77. Joy Ride (2001) - Watched this on DVD. I had this for about a month when I got it at the library. I looked through all of my items and told myself to watch this. I also remember hearing about this movie way back when, but I never saw it.
I must say that I was very intrigued by this movie. I felt the suspense when watching it, whether it was from Ted Levine's voice on the radio or any of the other scenes. I was at the edge of my seat. I would even call this an underrated movie. There were some gripes, however. When the killer was revealed, I had hoped it was actually Ted Levine, but the killer's identity wasn't fully revealed. So I guess the director did that to add to the mystique.
I will say that I was surprised to see that there were multiple alternate endings to this. The main one being that there was different footage used that it almost felt like a different movie. I wonder if there is a fan cut out there with that footage.
I also found out that there are two straight-to-video sequels. I am now curious about them.

24. Mr. Monk’s Last Case
An entirely unnecessary return to the world of Adrian Monk. They tried to stick to the old formula but the writing was sloppy. What could have been a good hour long episode was padded out to twice as long. The pacing was slow and they kept throwing in comic bits that went on way too long. And I guessed how the murder was going to take place before it even happened.
