I personally would've lead with something a touch more traditional, but it is a cool portrait I think that’s what I like about it. Younger Charles challenged tradition more than someone in his position had…and he only got the crown as an old man…I like the idea of his first official portrait being kind of bonkers. It’s like the artist was capturing the lost chaos of a Royal who spent decades hoping to upend tradition and didn’t get to a position to do it until he was too old and too a part of the machine he couldn’t really change. or maybe the painter just couldn’t do shoulders. I don’t know. I’m a movie guy. This is generally how the artist draws his portraits the. close focus on the face of the subject, with the clothing kinda fading into the background. The background of red helping blend the Welsh Guard uniform he's in probably wasn't necessarily the best choice (especially as it does open itself up to a lot of jokes) But the amount of details in the face is really impressive... also I personally think the Monarch Butterfly is a nice touch.
