Hi everyone! The F.A.N Movie Club is going strong and is near the end of the first round of member picks. We're looking to base the next round of films around a specific theme and you can help! The concept is The____Movie You Have Ever Seen. Themes like The Most Visually Stunning Movie or The Strangest Movie You've Ever Seen or the Most Action Packed Movie Ever are the sort of nominations we are looking for here. We presented eighteen films during the last round so, if we we're going to do a themed round, it needs to have a level of versatility to it. Try to avoid nominating things like "The Best Russian Movie Ever" or "The Worst Case of Shaky Cam in a Film", themes that don't have a lot of mileage. Don't feel obligated to nominate a theme that we can eighteen films out of but keep in mind that versatility is key. Since this isn't a tournament, we don't need a ton of nominations, just a couple of fun, well thought out ideas from each poster. We'll then pare down the choices and have a poll. Feel free to nominate even if you don't intend to present a film from that category. However, I certainly recommend nominating a subject that you love and would like to present an example of. If this is successful, I imagine we'll do this again, so if your choice isn't picked, don't worry, we might end up doing it next time. We're always looking for more presenters and more people to discuss the films we present. The F.A.N. Film Club Discussion thread can be found here: officialfan.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=offtopic&action=display&thread=434020The presentation schedule and other relevant information can be found here on Google Docs: docs.google.com/folder/d/0B9hPR8HPrcOLa3RNTzhWdWtIbkE/edit?pli=1&docId=0AthPR8HPrcOLdE5kRnF1LXY1Wnp5UWhrUXk3bVdETFE Kidglov3s' thread on Mike Nichols' The Graduate, our current film, can be found here: officialfan.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=offtopic&action=display&thread=454992

I think the idea of a common thread linking the movies together but one that doesn't limit selections would be fantastic. By that I mean something like the strangest movie you've ever seen, the funniest, etc.

Ooh and then we could have distinctions between live fish and dead fish; something like Wasabi, with sushi. The _________est movie you've seen would be great.

Your favorite movie would also be a great idea.

Your favorite movie would also be a great idea. That's probably the best category we could do, tbh. Nothing could be more versatile and, hopefully, it would motivate people to join up and present when it's their turn.

The thing is, I already used up my favorite film when I presented The Big Lebowski, and my other majorly favorite film was the first film we've covered, Pulp Fiction. If we did the favorite film route I guess I could go with my #3 film.

So, what are we going with? My vote is for movies that have one or more fish in them.

Favorite film is probably the best way to go. If you've already presented your favorite film and don't feel like doing your second or third favorite, you could do something like "Your favorite Underrated film" or "The first film that you saw in the theater" or something like that.

Ok, The Graduate was the last film on the schedule. Is anyone able to go for this week or should we give people some time, especially since we're still trying to figure out what to do?
I have a film I'd like to do but "Cat People" showed me that not everything is readily available. I would like to do Gillo Pontecorvo's "The Battle of Algiers". There is a Criterion DVD for it, so you should be able to watch it on Hulu Plus and, most likely on Netflix but I don't have that so I can't say for sure. It's also not too difficult to rent.
Barring that, I can do "Gates of Heaven" or "El Topo".
I do think "Your favorite Movie" is the best way to go.

I can go...but I think it would be best if we decide what direction to go in before we commit to another movie.

Gonna be hard to resist the crowd, but I think "favorite" is too soft and yet probably really difficult for some of us to choose.
I like the fish idea, and the "strangest" idea. That said, something cracks me up fierce with the idea of the "lamest" movies we've ever seen - not the worst; the lamest.
Also, when I proposed the idea of themes, I also suggested that themes not be mandatory; if someone has nothing for the theme, they can still pick a movie if it doesn't fit. A disclaimer would be nice in such a case though.

I'm really struggling thinking of any movies that have fish in them besides Finding Nemo, The Little Mermaid or Big Fish...and even then I can't remember if the fish that caused the problems in Big Fish is in it? But I'll try and find a movie that has a fish in it if the majority want to go in that direction.

But I'll try and find a movie that has a fish in it if the majority want to go in that direction. My concept wasn't like that it had to be about fish, just that one or more fish would appear in it. Like, Monty Python's Meaning of Life, The Godfather, Austin Powers would all count. I guess I was trying to think of an absurd, abstract and goofy theme that you could pretty much pick a million movies that fit it.

The "favorite movie" thing is too simple...besides, I already picked my favorite when I did my pick. A few theme ideas I can think of:
- Movies with your favorite actor or actress (or just any actor or actress you're a fan of)
- Academy Award winners (doesn't have to be Best Picture necessarily)
- Black and White movies (self-explanatory)
- Movies that begin with a particular letter (for example, bob picks the letter B, then everyone has to pick a movie that starts with that letter. The word "The" doesn't count in the title, so for example, "The Burning" from 1981 would count as a title that starts in B)
- Movies that take place in your location (maybe by state would be easier, but if you can think of any by city, even better. For countries outside of America, you go with the city there, but if you can't think of any, the country is fine)

In the end, this all so we can keep the club going. It really doesn't matter what the theme is, just as long as it gets people to sign up and present movies.
