Your average person that calls it "fake" is too much of an intellectual to actually watch the program and comprehend what it is these men (and some of the women) are actually doing.
It is scripted (much like popular TV programming used to be) and the actions are almost always planned out in advance.
Plastic palm trees are "fake" trees but the same individual would call the tree "artificial".
Man, people piss me off sometimes.

i use scripted, but most of the time i tell the people who think its fake to learn to fall off a 20 foot ladder, but they dont know how.

I think the difference is that for a long time, wrestling protected itself by saying it was real. That's where the "wrestling is fake" thing becomes an arguing point.

Wrestling is a tv show. tv shows are fictional. Wrestling was not originally a television show, although it has been greatly helped by television. That would be like saying sporting events are a TV show.

I don't say it's fake. If they say it's fake I ask them if they've ever been hit with a steel chair or some barbed wire.

It's all of them.
The best way to describe the events are 2-4, as they're all essentially the same thing. The events taking place are pre-determined, scripted or whatever you want to call it. The actual attacks are, for the most part, performances, in the same way a circus or a stunt show is a performance. People can still be hurt doing those things, but it's still planned out to various degrees
The competition aspect of it is fake. It's not real competition as they aren't really trying to beat each other, they're trying to put on a good show. Thus the competition is, by definition fake competition. If they were really trying to beat each other, it's resemble MMA or Boxing a lot more than what it is now. I don't think it's any insult to anyone to call it fake competition as long as you recognize what it is that you're talking about.
And people don't get on about 24 not being real because 24 never attempts to pass itself off as real, where wrestling sort of tries to.

I don't like the word scripted because then it seems as if all the spots in a match are written on a script when it isn't that way.

Does anyone realize that a top pro wrestling match is actually MORE physical than alot of other real sports?
people only look at it one way, they think that because it's planned, that it means you're planning to take it easy.
heh.
You have to look at it the other way. See, because it's planned, you HAVE to take the punishment, reguardless of how good you are, you have to go for 20 minutes. See, in Boxing, if you're good enough, you can get through the night without taking any damage, but in wrestling, you're booked to have a war if you're a main eventer on PPV.
There are places on your body that, if you hit, you'll get injured. It's THOSE places, like the face, kidney's or joints, that you are 100% fake with, but that's because you're leaving yourself open. It's everywhere else that you get hit hard, because It'll hurt, but not injure you untill a while.
Mike Tyson was in the real sport, and HHH is in the fake sport. HHH has taken way worse beatings inside a ring than Mike Tyson ever did.
Comprehend that for a second.

I had a whole discussion about this with someone else who called it a fake competition. I HATE the word Fake. I rarely hate anything, but I hate that. It's sort of like saying that noone gets hurt and noone has had their lives drastically changed by it. I've always respected anyone who can go in front of 20,000 people and get beaten the hell out of just to entertain them. Because that's what they want to do. It's sort of like going up to an actor and saying 'That was fake about how you were sad about that other person who didn't die. I can't respect you because of that.' You'd get eaten alive. Yes, even if it was Natalie Portman. So yeah, Pre-Determined, Scripted anything. Just not 'fake'. I don't like the word scripted because then it seems as if all the spots in a match are written on a script when it isn't that way. Well, it sort of is. Not written percisely, but certainly pointed out in some fashion.

I say "scripted" but the term "fake" doesn't bother me. I think when people get mad when others say it's fake that only helps promote the misconception that wrestling fans think it is real.

I'll agree there, in any discussion about it if you're already using the phrase " It's not fake".. they're not gonna hear the rest of your argument anyway.

"Scripted" is my preference. I would NEVER call it "fake" Me neither. I acknowledge the fact that it is not real (an idiot should be able to see that). However, I prefer not to just say fake, since it kinda goes without saying that it is a SHOW. Nothing more, nothing less. I know people will always point that out before they point out the fakeness of a movie or television show which they praise so highly.

See, that's always my automatic defense. Yup, it's just as fake as CSI ( or whatever they enjoy). That ends said debate fairly quickly.
