Someone asked for this, and well, its their fault!
As the Super Bowl of the movie world happens tonight at 8 PM EST, we'll chat here, make our predictions, make random-ass posting, and watch as self-absorbed assholes who make in a week more than you'll ever do in a lifetime pat themselves in the back for awarding the best bribing-Oscar campaign.
But most of all, an official thread where will whine and bitch about how the Oscars are idiotic. Enjoy!
I'll make my predictions for the other awards, but my picks are:
Best Picture: JUNO Best Director: The Coen brothers, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, THERE WILL BE BLOOD Best Actress: Julie Christie, AWAY FROM HER Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN Best Supporting Actress: Amy Ryan, GONE BABY GONE Best Original Screenplay: JUNO Best Adapted Screenplay: NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
Now you may ask, why JUNO?
Because as great as NCFOM and TWBB are, notice all the crying about them being "too dark"?
With JUNO as the lighthorse $100+ million movie....it'll win, because you can count on the Oscars for pussying out.
Oh well, at least Jon Stewart is hosting tonight.
"Hey Spielberg, I can't wait for you to complete your Dead Jews Trilogy!"

"Precedent for Juno Upsetting Best Pic" In case you were all wondering if there was ever precedent for a lighter film like Juno beating out such strong contenders, it happens more often than you’d think. Let’s take the oft-cited 1951 when An American in Paris won Best Picture. It had only won the WGA (for writing for a musical) and the Globe for Musical/Comedy. Juno has won just the WGA, however, with no Globe win. But still. Up against An American in Paris: A Streetcar Named Desire, Decision Before Dawn, A Place in the Sun, Quo Vadis. Best Director went to George Stevens for A Place in the Sun and the film had won the WGA, the DGA and the Globe for drama. Another year was when The Greatest Show on Earth won Best Pic over High Noon, Moulin Rouge and The Quiet Man, which ended up taking Best Director, which it also took at the Directors Guild. Finally, of course, there was Chariots of Fire beating favorites On Golden Pond and Reds. Again, Director and picture split. This phenom seems to occur when there are two strong contenders for Best Pic and a third popular crowd choice. This year the popular one would be Juno and the two strongest contenders might be No Country for Old Men and Blood or Michael Clayton. Since Juno just won the IFP, it seems that it has been cursed. Though curses were meant to be broken so we wait with baited breath for the wild finish to this whole big circus show. One thing that often can make the difference is a big cast of Hollywood stars. This most certainly was to The Departed’s advantage and is most certainly to No Country’s advantage. www.awardsdaily.com/?p=1357

Amy Ryan MUST win Best Supporting Actress. She played a Dot rat so perfectly that it was kind of eerie.

I'm always amused how the British media cheer for British actors as if it was the frickin World Cup.

I'm always amused how the British media cheer for British actors as if it was the frickin World Cup. Because they need small petty victories?
