You ever watch King of the Hill and think that it must really suck to be Bobby Hill? He's not quite right as Hank often says, but if you watch the show a lot it's not really his fault. It's the fault of his parents! We know that Bobby isn't really that good at athletics, but really how many people are anyway? The thing is whenever Bobby finds something that he really is good at, either Hank or Peggy ruin it for him. Bobby finds a passion for Rose growing, but Hank strong arms him and takes away his passion for it by turning it into a sport for himself. Bobby finds he's really good at cooking, but Peggy steals it away from him and tries to undermine him 'cuz she's "jealous" of his better ability at making food. Theres quite a few episodes like this where Bobby finds something he's actually good at but one or both of his parents ruin it for him at the end. Is it any wonder that Bobby is a weakling and a weirdo? Any time he gets excited about something, Hank and Peggy are right there to slap him down and put him back in his place. He should have ran away years ago.

I think the ONLY time his parents screwing up what he is good at actually helped Bobby was the episode where he became a model, and that's only because Hank knew Bobby's douche bag friends would ruin the fashion show themselves.

Even still, the message of "don't do what you want to do, others will make fun of you" seems a little off.

Realism...may not have as lighthearted a message, but similarly to Aesop's Fables, you actually learn something useful.

My 18-year-old kid brother is giant Bobby Hill. I kid you not.

I've always felt that Hank and Peggy are the worst parents on television. At best, they're neglectful of Bobby, and at worst...well, Hank loves Ladybird more than Bobby, on top of his general nature to be as big of an ass to Bobby as Cotton was to him. And Peggy is only about her ego.
Seriously, the only rivals for the bad parenting award, in my opinion, are Peter and Lois Griffin (and even that's a lopsided accusation, as Lois shows herself to be more than competent - hell, she's the only thing holding that family together).

Even still, the message of "don't do what you want to do, others will make fun of you" seems a little off. But that's realism. Realism...may not have as lighthearted a message, but similarly to Aesop's Fables, you actually learn something useful. That's what I love about this show. Dale is paranoid, and not much is going to change that. Just like Bill has low self-esteem. Plus, it follows the whole "parents always think they know what's best for their kids" thing, but shows it in a more realistic light. It doesn't always show the dad or mom as the hero. Yes, Hank can at times be a kinder version of his own dad. And Peggy's ego is the size of Texas. But you know what? That's life. It's stuff like this (plus the fact that I lived in Texas for several years and have met people like Hank and Peggy) that puts KOTH over Family Guy and the Simpsons in my book.

I think they pasted on that donut throwing ending just to make Hank look at least partially in the right, 95% of that episode Hank was just a total ass. It's like anything that Bobby likes that doesn't involve Propane or Football ends in Hank saying "No God-dang way". Still, I'd take Hank as a Dad over Peggy being my Mother, man do I hate her, how can anyone stand to be around her? She's at least in the top 5 most annoying TV Mom list, maybe #1.
