Ah, you're pretty much from around the same era I got heavily into anime..when it wasn't QUITE as big in the US as it is now. Armitage III and Ninja Scroll are both awesome, yeah. And TM and Cowboy Bebop are two of my favourites that have stuck with me. I miss those days. Yeah, back then it was popular, but much more of a niche then it is now. Also, I used to be completely obsessed with Ryoko. Now I'm only 1/2 obsessed, as in I keep it to myself. Oh yeah, I loved Ryoko. When I used to RP with friends, that's who I was...constantly. I was such a loser, haha.

Well, from what I can tell, the Japanese treat anime as their gods. They often sacrifice outsiders to them by tying them to a poll and then setting them on fire. Or, they eat them.

I own the entire Tenchi Muyo! OVA (inculding the most recent OVA 3 . It's the series with The Goddess War, and the lighthawk wings stuff in it.), The complete Tenchi Universe series, and own all 3 Tenchi movies. Tenchi is an one series I thought I was going to hate, but I end up loving it to death.

I got into anime in the mid-to-late 90s, courtesy of one of those Columbia House subscriptions. Y'know, a new movie every month, cancel at anytime, blah blah blah. At the time, all I knew was Speed Racer, so getting my hands on Akira, Fist of the North Star, The Professional: Golgo 13, and Barefoot Gen was quite an eye-opener. And now, I can't stand most of the anime that gets shown on TV here in the US. *shrug*

I gotta start by saying I don't watch Anime at all. Once when I was 12, my friend invited me over to watch something I "had to see". It was a video of topless anime girls swimming and playing in the water or something. That was when his mom walked in. It was maybe the most awkward moment of my life. What would you say if you caught your son and his friend watching naked cartoons? "Gimme me my tape back?"

I don't know ... I think I've been a fan of anime since I watched the movie Akira those many years ago. I was laid off and I had heard some things about this movie and found a copy of it one day. So I bought the VHS and went back to my friend's place to watch it. He was less than impressed with it, but I was hooked from that point onward.
Now I don't watch all anime, as I am one of those people who doesn't like all anime. In fact, I've gotten in discussions with friends who like Inuyasha and I am of the mind that it sucks. But stuff like Cowby BeBop. Trigun, Death Note, and Hellsing ... oh yeah, bring me more.

Except I didn't get into AKIRA until a couple of years after I got into anime via Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. Hells yeah.
