So Aliens Vs Predator 2 came out today on DVD, and of course being that I like such things I get it, and you know what, I thought it was damn cool.
It was totally violent, not too talky, had all the right amount of call backs to previous films including the music and sound ( I totally marked for the original sound effects for things like the Predator view and the radar scope from Aliens), it was just "cool" for lack of a better word, the kind of thing I'd expect an Aliens Vs Predator movie to be yeh know? Something I'd tell my friends to watch 'cuz it's freaking awesome.
But heres the thing, I go on over to IMDB to give it a half way decent rating 7/10 which is usually my "cool movie but it's no Shawshank" kind of rating and while I'm looking at the other ratings all I see is 100's of people rating it 1/10 and giving it the most horrible reviews this side of Halloween: Resurrection.
For starters, I've never given any film a 1/10, as I'm fairly certain that represents a broken movie, boom in the shot, actors looking at the camera, scenes edited in the wrong order, you know that sort of thing. It always bugs the Hell out of me when people do that for some reason, as if the only two ratings available are 1 and 10. Now of course 1/5 is a different story if that's how you rank stuff, but anyway....
I'm reading these reviews and thinking, "What the Hell did you expect from an AvP flick"? A great deal of ire seems to stem from it being a "slasher" movie, lots of people indeed do get ground up, but you know that was kind of the point it was a "we're sorry for the pg-13 rating last time" so they make up for the lack of blood in the last one that people complained so much about, apparently they made up a bit too much.
Also, in a movie about an intergalactic warrior beheading reptile like Aliens I don't exactly expect Hamlet so complaining about the dialog seems a bit strange to me. What are the Humans supposed to be saying? Talking poetically about the meaning of life or screaming "NOOOOOOOO" and "RUUUUUUUUUUUUN" as their friends are turned into mulch?
Did people not know what this movie was all about? Sure, AvP2 isn't a Turner Classic, or really even an Aliens or original Predator, but it's not a 1 star piece of trash, is it?
I dunno, maybe I'm just not jaded enough in our modern World to give every movie in the World a 1 just because it's "bad" or "not as good as the first one" but dammit, I'll give movies 4's and 6's and maybe even 8's, cuz those numbers need love too.
