I used to watch and love the show when I was younger but I can't for the life of me remember anything outside of Optimus Prime was good. Decepticons were bad.
So for you die hard fans I thought it would be fun for you to tell me what ever you know about transformers.

Before anyone else says it: Soundwave superior, Constructicons inferior!
Also, I don't really understand everyone's hatred of Hot Rod. He seemed like an alright Autobot. Granted I really didn't watch a whole lot of the third season.

You didn't know about the series of episodes where Bert came to live with guys? It was heralded as the greatest part of Seinfeld EVER! (joking)

All you need to know about 80s Transformers was that it was AWESOME.
Also, Speed, the main hate for Hot Rod, from my understanding, was when he become Rodimus Prime after the death of Optimus Prime.

IDW is you're hook up; be on the lookout for the colelcted editions of Best of the UK: Dinobots, and Best of the UK: Target 2006, for some of the best comic stories of the 80's.

The movie was good, the pointless deaths...not so much.
They killed off all my favorite characters just so they could make new toys.
And yes, Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime sucks.

Ahhhh so hot rod was the main good guy from the movie. It's weird. I can remember things from shows I haven't seen in forever but Transformers is a complete block in my mind.

I can remember things from shows I haven't seen in forever but Transformers is a complete block in my mind. You probably did it subconsciously, because a lot of the old cartoon was just terrible. Particularly early on, when we had awesome moments like Optimus yelling in Megatron's voice to attack. Still, once Jazz scared off Mongolian hordes by blaring music at them, so I can't be too harsh on it.

Hot Rod was bound to be hated, since he was the one the Leadership Matrix chose to replace Optimus Prime. Nobody could fill those boots. Not even Ultra Magnus, and he was the same type of robot as Prime.
Anyway, the old cartoon, the Transformer planet was running out of energy, so the Autobots and Decepticons each sent out teams to go to another planet to find new energy sources. After a fight in space, the Autobot ship crashed into the side of a volcano in the US during some prehistoric time with some Decepticons on board. Fast forward a few thousand years, the Transformer planet is still around despite running out of energy for millennia, and the self-repairing Autobot computer comes back online and sends out probes to explore for templates to repair the Autobots and Decepticons. In the beginning, only the Autobots were cars and the Decepticons were planes, and guns, and a boom box. Then in the later seasons came the Airiobots and the Stunticons, both were swerve teams that could unite into a bigass robot, along with the Constructicons, and the Dinobots, who couldn't combine, but were cool, because, crap, dude, dinosaurs. So, to sum up:
First season: What do you mean nobody notices this giant spaceship sticking out the side of a volcano? Second season: Where are all these guys coming from? Movie: Why'd you have to kill Optimus, dammit? Third season and beyond: Screw you, Rodimus! You're not fit to lick Optimus's boots! Just ask him! Hey, what's he doing back?
Incidentally, what's everyone's feelings on the whole Beast Wars/Beast Machines series?

Starscream is a badass period. was that the white jet that transformed into a gun? If so he was my fav. I bought the 20 year anniversary special edition of the movie not to long ago. I like it. I remember being upset that Prime died.

No, Starcream was just a jet/robot, who was always hovering around Megatron's second in command.

I kind of want to know something about Rodamous/Hot Rod. Ok so HotRod gets the Matrix and changes into Rodamous. In the S3 episode where Prime returns, Rodamous gives him the Matrix back and changes back to Hot Rod. If the Matrix has that sort of ability, why does Optimous look the same prior to and after getting the Matrix?
And did't Judd Nelson do the voice of Hot Rod? Is that where the hate comes from?

If the Matrix has that sort of ability, why does Optimous look the same prior to and after getting the Matrix? And did't Judd Nelson do the voice of Hot Rod? Is that where the hate comes from? My quick explination (which may be entirely wrong). Since both Prime and Ultra Magnus seemed to have been created with the purpose of one day carrying the matrix, their bodies do not end up being transformed, while Rodimus ends up being transformed for the purposes of being able to "properly" carry the Matrix. Similar to this is in Beast Wars when Optimus Primal has to carry Prime's spark for a while, and doing so transforms him into Optimal Optimus (basically gets really frickin' huge and gains vehicular transformations) Again, could be entirely wrong as to why Hot Rod/Rodimus changes back and forth between forms depending on whether or not he's carrying The Matrix

Second season: Where are all these guys coming from? The Decepticons built a space bridge linking Earth and Cybertron. This is how the Transformers who were not on the Ark, eventually got to Earth, with exceptions of course.

This is how the Transformers who were not on the Ark, eventually got to Earth, with exceptions of course. That was more of a rhetorical question. And the reason why Optimus Prime never changed his form with the Matrix, and Hot Rod did, is because Optimus's badassery was greater than the whole Matrix. Hot Rod had to have a different body just to be able to hold the level of badassery that was the Matrix, wherehas Optimus's badassery could handle it in his regular form. Make sense?
