Subquestion: Has he always horrible, despicable kiss-ass?
I'm watching Rock Bottom, Mankind vs. the Rock. And, yes, I'm just now, nine years later, watching this show for the first time and wish to discuss it. Your commentary team is Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler. The backstory is Mr. McMahon pulled a Montreal on Mankind at Survivor Series 1998 against the Rock. The afternoon of Rock Bottom, Mankind attacks the Rock from behind and messes up his ribs. Due to a provision in the match's contract (I assume, SOME contract), if the Rock did not defend the championship that night, it would automatically become Mankind's.
Throughout the night, Mr. McMahon and Mankind meet in Mankind's office (read: dirty boiler room with a piece of notebook paper reading "Mankind's office" taped on the door), and eventually come to some sort of agreement. That agreement is that Mankind will void that particular clause in the contract if Mr. McMahon admits he screwed him at Survivor Series ("THE BIGGEST DOUBLE-CROSS IN WWE HISTORY!"). Of course, Mr. McMahon does not agree to this, and, thus, the match begins.
As they fight outside the ring, Mankind smashes the Rock with the ring steps. Mr. McMahon then grabs a microphone and instructs Mike Chioda to disqualify Mankind for, and I QUOTE, disqualify Mankind for "any legitimate reason." "Any legitimate reason" were the exact words that came out of Mr. McMahon's mouth.
Michael Cole, then, in his terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad kissassery of the faces and automatic hatred and disdain for the heels, exclaims that, and again, I QUOTE "Mr. McMahon is making up the rules as he goes!"
...
It's a good thing to know that, before December 13th, 1998, there were no disqualification rules in WWE. I understand that he's the face announcer and should act accordingly, but shouldn't your sport's, ANY sport's, play-by-play guy exhibit basic knowledge of said sport's rules? What's this guy's appeal that has kept him in that announcer's chair for so long?

He's a company man. That's why he still has a job.

He's head of WWE.com. And he's improved over the years. Plus he's taking JR's job when he finally retires.

Oh please like you could do any better . I bet Michael Cole wonders how you still have a job and nitpicks about every little thing you do (assuming you are even able to get a job.)

In all fairness, that's probably rather low on the list of the stupider things Cole has ever said.

Not to spoil Smackdown for those that don't want to be spoiled, but, they are taking steps into making him look better, by giving him a shitty color man

Do I need to remind you guys how he spoiled the Wrestlemania main event? huh? He mentioned during Wrestlemania XV (or maybe it was during the WM preshow, can't remember) that the NEW WWF Champ would be on some Home Shopping Network show taking place after WM...thus giving away that Austin would beat the Rock in the main. Of course, most people probably assumed that was going to happen anyway, since it is Wrestlemania and the face usually wins to close the show, but still.

So...THAT was an appropriate response. First of all, I nitpicked about one thing, not "every little thing" the man has done in his life. Second, I never said I could do better. I'd probably be a lousy commentator. You can't just pretend I said something and then try to argue that point. Since you obviously didn't take the time to actually READ what I wrote, and just gave us the ol' generic, snarky reply that you assume just about covers it, nowhere in my post did I question the man's skills as a color commentator. That is not what this is about; this is kayfabe, buddy. This is about his blatant over-selling of the concept of faces and heels, to the point that, in cases like this, it damages his credibility as a wrestling commentator. And, just between you and me, if you plan to stick around this forum, acting like a jackass isn't the way to do it.

And kudos on the ass-kissing, every Mysterio match nowadays is one big ol' verbal BJ from Cole. If he wasn't so blindly devoted to squealing in delight at an action by a babyface and then scourningly disregarding the equivalent perform by a heel, he wouldn't honestly be that bad.

Cole still has a job because the company likes him, and I'm sure he's an ok guy IRL.

Well golly gee, Michael Cole is certainly the VERY FIRST commentator I've ever heard of who is overly nice about the faces, overly mean about the heals and has a weakness for hyperbole.
As we know, JR and Joey Styles call it right down the middle.
Give me a break, people. I'm no Cole mark, but I like the guy a reasonable amount. I'll take him over Grisham or Matthews or - whisper it - Kevin Kelly any day of the damn weak. Like it or lump it, he is the least of a vast pantheon of evils.

Seems like a hard worker, nice enough guy, and he's doing his job. He's playing the "babyface" commentator, outraged by heel tactics and a lack of fairplay.
He's okay. He just plays a lovehead on TV.
