But then surely by that definition he doesn't love wrestling at all. On Friday night Rock said that he "retired" from wrestling in 2003 which is fair enough but surely you don't retire from something that you love. Nobody is saying he HAS to come back every three weeks, but he hasn't come back at all so why not just admit that he doesn't have a great passion for wrestling and he'd be happy if he never appeared on a wrestling show again? I don't see that definition really... By similar twisting, if you really loved wrestling, you would have to be a wrestler. If you aren't a wrestler, you don't really love it. Perhaps an extreme exclamation, but I think it makes the point. Just because you loved a job doesn't mean you necessarily want to do it every day for the rest of your life. Of course you can retire from a career that you love. In light words, it's confusing to me that someone would even make that claim, especially about a job as physically and mentally demanding as wrestling.

A round of applause to the WWE for this: they get John Cena to do an interview in the Sun, a British paper, confident that any comments he makes will filter through the internet and build interest.
Then, if they decide to pursue a Rock/Cena angle down the line, they have had plenty of free publicity for it, self-generated by the IWC.
If on the other hand, there is nothing to any of it, they can simply turn their backs on the whole thing, as it was an interview conducted by a non-WWE owned publication, and one that they can simply imply took any comments made out of context and wash their hands of the whole thing. Either way, a buzz is created with the minimum of cost to the company.
Now THAT is how you play the internet at their own game.

Why does everyone who defends him keep saying that he shouldn't have to work a full schedule? No on here is talking about that.
The Rock couldn't make time for an anniversary show and I've heard he also caused his father's HOF induction to be postponed. Showing up every couple of years isn't exactly a big commitment. I'm sure Vince would love to have him tape a promo from home; that'd take what, half an hour?

But isnt Dwayne Johnson the property of Dwayne Johnson, and not the WWE or its fans?
I would have liked Jake Roberts to have not basically retired in 1992 when he was 37 but he did so I live with it.
What I wonder about is whether or not this piece from Cena is legit non kayfabe, and if its true, just when Mr Cena will reach the limit of Mr McMahon's anal cavity.

Also why should he come back if he did, you'd hear constant reports about how the new mainevent boys feel it's unfair that he comes back in and is ahead of them. You'd have guys saying "oh he doesn't matter anymore" This is wrestling don't think it wouldn't happen....the last time he came back he was reluctant to put anyone other than Brock over because he felt all he did with the Hurricane was ruined by Triple H and he thought it would happen again.

Did the Rock have to make time for that anniversary show? He's his own person, he can do as he wants and unless he's under contract, he doesn't have to appear anywhere he doesn't have to. They invited him and he opted not to appear. Would I have loved to seen him? Certainly, but it's his choice.
