Just watched this again, and was just wondering what peoples thought of it were.
My thoughts were it was below average, what was with the appalling treatment of tazz, he lasted barely 5 seconds, just ran in and kane eliminated him. Also the whole chyna angle seemed a bit distasteful after owen hart.
how come tazz was being buried 12 months after his debut? was this the start of vince burying everyone that wasnt WWE bred?

I think the match itself, despite Tazz's treatment, was the best one, certainly my favourite. Show's return was liquid greatness.
Tazz's treatment, while shoddy, did lead to some hilarity this year in that Cole was asking Tazz what it's like in the ring during a Rumble and for strategy and suchlike, and somebody jokes about Coach being in a Rumble before and Coach is like don't mention it. Except that Coach was in two matches to Tazz's one, and both times he lasted longer.

What was the Chyna angle again?
I agree that the Rumble match was awesome, too. I think this was the last time Kane looked seriously dominant.

I think she had a kayfabed neck injury, and "injured" herself during the match, and they did the whole EMT bit, along with JR and King using their "Owen" voices. The whole thing lasted somewhere around 5-10 minutes, and what pretty much what you'd expect...

In regards to Tazz's depush, I believe his long nagging neck injury from his ECW days was starting to aggravate him more than it had in the previous years. He never properly healed from his neck injury in ECW. He was in a lot of pain during his WWE days and this was part of the reason why he was deemphasized after a few months.

How are those "Owen" voices? They were pretending Chyna was seriously injured. JR couldn't be like "BAH GAWD KING CHYNA'S NECK IS BROKEN IN HALF".

That Rumble also had a great ladder match with Y2J and Benoit, and Drew Carey's short tenure in the Rumble match itself was pretty memorable.

Also the whole chyna angle seemed a bit distasteful after owen hart. How so? Wasn't it only the second time ever that King had left the commentary position, the previous time having been Owen?

I merely used the term because it was perceived that way at the time, with it being the first big injury angle since Owen's death. I think we've come to perceive it otherwise since then, though.

Go back and watch the footage of OTE '99 and King and JR's faces and voices. If you can't tell the difference between their "fake somber" voice and their "holy shit some guy we care about just plunged to his death" voices then you aren't paying attention. The best actor in the world couldn't replicate the look on Lawler's face when he returned to the announce table.

Wasn't it only the second time ever that King had left the commentary position, the previous time having been Owen? That's what i was referring to. And i worry that one day they'll actually cut to JR saying "we'd like to point out that this isn't part of any storyline" allthough i'm not sure even the WWE would sink that low.

I went back and watched the latter match a while ago, and, it becomes more and more apparent why Chris Benoit ended up with such massive brain damage.

They've been doing the "this is real" voice a lot since then, how come you aren't calling them out for it when it happens more recently? Because that same voice has become rather cliche, and we've almost become desensitized to it. But this was back only 18 or so months after Owen's death, so I think it was a little fresh in all of our minds at that point in time. For them to even try and replicate that somber tone was like opening up a wound that hadn't quite healed, at least for a lot of people I spoke with at the time.

Deffinatly one of the best Rumble matches of all time. I loved the way Austin won too. Was about someone used a chair like that. The Austin/Rock getting up at the same time thing was awesome too...

I'm sorry but the whole "Owen Voice" thing just sounds like a lame excuse to critique WWE. Some people will just dig as deep as they can to find a reason to trash WWE. How sad.

I doubt Chyna would do this angle as a nod to Owen's accident. They were apparently good friends according to her RAW Is OWEN interview.

Forget Owen. If the Chyna angle was insensitive to anyone, it was Droz.
