I just finished watching WrestleMania 9 tonight (yeah, I really didn't have much else to do). I normally see a lot of Hogan-hate on these boards especially with him going over Yokozuna at the end of this event. After watching it again and seeing the crowd's reaction, what's the big deal with it?
Supposedly the WWF wanted to build toward a Hogan/Hart match at SummerSlam and we all know that never happened. But I know that as a wrestling fan in 1993, I wanted anybody but Yokozuna as world champion.
Say what you want about politics, but Hogan made for a better world champion than Yokozuna, even if that only lasted a few months. And for those who say "Oh, Hogan was champion before, that had been done to death!" ... take a look at the current WWE champion.
In my opinion, Hogan winning the belt was the highlight of WrestleMania 9, next to Mr. Perfect calling Lex Luger the "Larcessist."

Because Hogan kind of held up Vince for it, and seemed like a politicing douche?

Is there any proof of Hogan "holding up" Vince for the belt? Hogan probably demanded it in his contract. And if he "held him up" like Jarrett did, Hogan would have never been welcomed back.

OK, here's the thing. If logic was simply that "We need Hogan as champ more than Yokozuna", why did Hogan lose the damn title to Yokozuna at the next PPV? The reign was completely meaningless and, IIRC, Hogan did not defend the title once save for losing it to Yoko. So, any argument of "better for business" seems to make little sense. Why squash a guy and make him look like total crap on the biggest day of the year, then lose in the rematch, when it would serve more interests to have dude go over on the big stage and look credible (or evil in this case) to more people?

In order to get a Hart vs Hogan match, Hogan would had to beat Yoko anyway. Since Hogan backed out of the match because he thought Bret was too small, he lost it to Yoko.
I wouldn't say Hogan made him "look like crap." In kayfabe, Yokozuna had just wrestled Bret and was tired. Mr. Fuji threw salt in his eyes and caused Hogan to win. It's not like Hogan tapped him on the shoulder and then pinned him.

The thing is, you say "I wanted anybody but Yoko as champion"
But Bret would've been champion if Hogan didn't feel like winning the strap that night.

Yeah i'm not even a big Bret fan but either he should've kept the belt or just lost it to Yoko. I was watching it live in 93 and thought it was so dumb for Hogan to win the belt. It made no sense. Why would Fuji challenge Hogan to a match RIGHT NOW when Yoko was tired and just finished a tough match? Vince had to realize it was a mistake because he dropped the belt in his first defense and was gone from the WWF until 2002.

In Bret's book, he claims that Yoko and he were just pawns in the chess game between Hogan and McMahon. Obviously, real insider knowledge will be quickly dismissed as "Bret's opinion".
What intrigued me more was a potential Warrior/Bret main event at WM 9, again, according to Bret's book, but Warrior was fired in November the year before. Say what you want about either man, but Bret/Warrior would have been much, much better than anything that actually happened at WM 9.

Yeah, I have to admit, as one of the bigger Warrior haters on this board, that a Warrior/Bret match, done right, would have been worlds better than what actually took place.

I never got the WWFs facisination with Yokozuna. He was titanicly fat even at his "lighter" weight in 93. And people say he's agile for his size, which is great and all but all i really remember him doing was vulvan neck pinches, that horrible elbow drop that he always missed, and a weak looking legdrop. Why wouldnt the WWF just push Lex Luger to the moon right out of the gates? He already had Main Event ability. Wasn't the greatest wrestler, but his gimmick at the time where he was just KOing everybody he came across put him over as a killer. Why waste all that in the mid cards?

My issue is that Bret was built as a terrific fighting champion. Then Yoko beats him, and is then soundly beaten in like 30 seconds by the orange goblin.
As a result, Bret and Yoko look like asses

Hogan got a fluke win over Yokozuna and then put him over cleanly a month later. The big deal is that Bret Hart is a big mark for himself and wanted to be the one to beat Hogan.

To me, Hulk Hogan winning the belt at the end of the show was the only option. Bret Hart retaining the title would stop Yokozuna's push and Yokozuna winning would send the fans home disapointed. It was a lose-lose situation. The only thing that was made a real big deal for the event was Hulk Hogan coming back, and that was in the middle of the event. So having him unexpectingly show up to win the championship was a pleasant surprise for the fans. His championship reign itself could've been much better I agree, and I would've liked to see Hulk Hogan vs. Bret Hart at Summerslam 93, but that didn't happen.

The WWF tried to make Lex Lugar the Hulk Hogan of the new generation, but the WWF audience didn't bite. I think by late 1993 the WWF fans were tired of the superhero era of wrestling and wanted to watch more talented wrestlers like Bret Hart, Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels. It's common knowledge that Hogan's talent didn't get him to the top of the WWF mountain. It was his look and charisma, and although Lugar had the look he never had the charisma and came off as a poor man's Hulk Hogan.
