I was looking into subscribing to PWI and The Wrestler today and the total cost for them is $54.00. It is 12 issues total plus the Almanac. Do yall think it is worth that price or would it be better to purchase off of the newstand?

Subsriptions tend to be cheaper than buying in the shops so if you want to get them then the best way is subscribing.

I'm marginal on PWI and the Wrestler. They have some interesting information, but a large amount of filler. They even carry a fair amount of the old Kayfabe-type stories.
I buy one occasionally on the newsstand(2-3 times a year)-thats all I really need to keep up with what they can offer.

I buy them occassionally, I find them good bathroom reading or on the train going to work and stuff like that. I've considered subscribing, but I've never quite been able to convince myself that it's really worth it.

Its 12 double issues of the two mags. I thought the Wrestler doubled with Inside Wrestling?

I vote no on this. Too much kayfabe, and if you want kayfabe, with better pictures too, just go to WWE.com. Although, the last PWI I picked up in the supermarket had decent international information.

What's the point if you already have internet access? Besides, they're mark magazines which pander to WWE's monopoly.
The only reason why I ever picked up Apter mags in the first place is because they were originally the only way I could keep up with what was happening in ECW in the early- and mid-90s.

I'd like to read one just for the nostalgia factor.

I agree. Once I figured out that wrestling is scripted I kinda felt like a real dope reading Apter mags.

I get what you're saying, but I think it's more that they acknowlege that WWE is in the power position and rank things accordingly. They're always pretty keen on any company that emerges as a potential challenger to WWE's monopoly, namely TNA and ROH, and they try to put them over. To give one example, when Christian went from WWE to TNA, they treated it like it was a really big deal and compared it to Kevin Nash and Scott Hall going from WWF to WCW.

Yea PWI was the best mag for a long time. Then it seems to not bad as good. The rewards issue, the 500, and the year in review is the ones I get if any. The rewards and 500 seem fall in creditablity since 02 when I really saw it. When Austin was ranked 11 over all even though he walked out over half the year.
Now number one has been given to Cena or Batista.
I was more amazed that HBK and McMahon got match of the year. That made no sense to me. Because I saw that match and no way it was that. Entertaining but not that great to be better then anything else that happened in that time frame.

To give one example, when Christian went from WWE to TNA, they treated it like it was a really big deal and compared it to Kevin Nash and Scott Hall going from WWF to WCW. Interesting. The thing about how they documented Christian's jump to TNA surprises me, since unlike Hall & Nash, I remember that Christian was relegated to playing a whiny jobber before he left the WWF. Anyway, back when I read Apter mags, I always resented how ECW wrestlers were never the focal point of an issue's cover, despite the fact that ECW was easily putting on the most groundbreaking product of any wrestling federation in the mid-90s. PWI editors raved about how incredible and unique Sabu was, but the best they could give him were sub-photo on the covers of their magazines - as if they couldn't be bothered to take a financial risk on showcasing him on their cover, despite what a huge sensation he was. And take the PWI 500: In the late 90s, RVD ranked 2nd, when he was clearly deserving of the #1 position. They didn't rank him at #1 until 2002, at which point he'd become a WWF wrestler and had to water down his wrestling style.

Get the yearly almanac and PWI 500. Other than that, neither one is worth buying.
