So what's different with new Family Guy?
And what the hell does 'rant' mean?

Very mediocre. I wasn't impressed with American Dad either. Really? I thought it was one of the stronger showings of both. My only complaint against American Dad was that it dragged in the middle. I haven't been impressed with Family Guy since it came back; very hit-and-miss to me. I'll be honest, I don't like Brian, his intellectual snobbery is just too much for me. Cleveland seemed out of character for much of the episode, and honestly, I hate it when the writers let their political views seep into the episodes. (I don't "lean" either way, but I get tired of political mudslinging.) Also, I didn't like the follow-up to the "Cool Whip" joke, it took FAR too much time. Like I said, it's hit-and-miss to me, and this was a miss. And the American Dad episode reminded me of the first season, and that's not a compliment. For an episode centered around Steve, it was very boring.

I really liked the new episode. 3 cutaways total, if I recall: the Horton one (which was jsut brutally great) and then 2 duds about a laughing 37 year old woman and a screaming Arab, which were just unfunny in almost every way possible. I was hoping that this new MacFarlane deal with Google (short 'toons that are basically the typical FG cutaways) would result in less cutaways in FG itself. So far....so good. Also, no Chris and Meg. Weird.

I loved Cleveland's new badass attitude.

I still enjoy American Dad more than Family Guy, but both episodes were okay. This has been the year of meh season premires for me. The first ep of the Office and Always Sunny falls into that category. All four have been funny, but not as good as they used to be. Both Sunny and the Office have kind of gone off the deep end.
The only show to really wow me so far was The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
I did like this bit from American Dad though:
{Roger pulls up on a bike}
Stan: Do you know where Steve is? Roger: Yeah I dropped him off at some retirement home. Stan: Oh my god! Which one? Roger: 'The Crow's Feet' - no that's not it, I just made that up.
Something about that really stuck a funny chord with me.

Same here, though I didn't feel the drag. AmDad made us cackle last night, where Family Guy left us going "And what now?"

Well, the random clips are the thing I hated the most on a show that grinds my gear for so many reasons...
So the lack of non-sequitur randomness is a step in the right direction.

Getting back to Family Guy, I think they're going in the right direction. All the cutaways were becoming overkill, especially last season. I'll also say the new King of the Hill episode was pretty good, but not spectacular.

I don't know why I still watch this show. Maybe I'm a masochist.

Again, I will never escape the irony of Family Guy somehow being preferred to the "____ Movie" series, when they're both the same shit, just in a different format.

I thought it was a good episode, although I thought they wasted a lot of Dog is God spelled backwards and Anubis jokes by making Brian an atheist.
The Laura Bush joke may have been the oddest political joke since Bart Simpson met George H.W. Bush. However, Animation is not the best place for topical humor.
I did enjoy the explanation of how only people outside the family can understand Stewie, well observation anyways. But it was a wonderful scene.

Wait, you hated random clips on a show that was built on random clips? The only difference was, the show had really good storylines the first three seasons, and the clips were fairly short, got to the point, and were funny. The clips now are none of those things.

I think we should pull up our bootstraps, oil up a few asses, and do some plowing of our own." (Cut to Dennis and Charlie looking confused) Mac: "Not gay sex."

Family Guy's plots have never been good and are just tacked on so they can show the cutaway gags without being called the animated Mad TV. MacFarlane's almost as good at sketch comedy as Seth Green but that's about it...

For example, the one that introduced Peter's father. Really good, it pulled at your heartstrings. Just a story about a son trying to get his father's approval. Maybe a little cliched, but it's better than what they have now.
