I'll be brutally honest... ALWAYSI'm not kidding. Since I've started watching again, I've never had a moment when I wasn't sort of embarrassed of publicly admitting being a fan. Wrestling around here has always been "stupid stuff for Americans and kids". Or at best "the last silly trend from America" I've tried to explain to many non-fans friends why wrestling is ok, and why it can be fun to watch, but I've found no convincing argument. Because, let's face it, there ISN'T a good argument Even stripped down of all the over the top gimmicks, of all the bells and whistles, the basic concept is: choreographed fight with predetermined outcome. How can you defend this? "but they're athletes!". True, but their performance is staged and the outcomes are preplanned, so what's the point in being an athlete if a fat 300 pounder can win just because he's popular? "I enjoy the storytelling". Fine, but all in all it's like General Hospital, with more men in spandex who pretend to beat the hell out of eachother... "the moves look cool and difficult to perform". True again, but what's the point? Ability doesn't determine who wins in the end. And it can go on and on for hours. Don't get me wrong, I've been a wrestling fan for 23 years, and I'll probably be a fan in the future, but I just can't seem to find a good LOGICAL explaination to "defend" my fandom. Sadly, when a non-fan points out all the flaws of the product, it's hard to counfute his point without stooping to the "it's stil real to me" level... My best rebuttal is: "I like it because it's an enjoyable form of light entertainment: partly a sport, mostly a TV series, nothing overly demanding or complicated to follow." But "defending" it while it's on, and Rey Mysterio is kicking Kane's ass, or a random guy has his face shoved in Vince's ass, well... how can I justify that?

anytime someone gives you grief about being a wrestling fan, show them that 'Heh!' video of scott steiner and they will laugh. It has worked without fail on several occassions for me. Then you say, "you laughed, you just found wrestling entertaining, thats why i watch it."

This cannot ever be defended. I use Katie Vick as an argument FOR watching wrestling.

While Dragon Dragon may be hard to defend, he's awesome regardless.

Then you say, "you laughed, you just found wrestling entertaining, thats why i watch it." I showed my brother that and the music video. He only laughed at the "OWWW!" and the botched jump off the apron, but then again, he's difficult to impress. Then again, he's a Carlos Mencia fan, so go figure.

Wow this thread took off overnight. I just remembered the longest argument I ever had with a non-fan. It was about this guy. Someone along the lines of "Why did they have a retarded wrestler" "Well, he's not really retarded, it's just a retarded gimmick, in more ways than one" Later... "What ever happened to him anyway?" "He got fired" "Really? What for?" "Drugs" "Wow, a retard with a drug problem. That's awesome" "No...whatever"

I find it hard to defend my fandom during trashy Diva segments. I.E. Wet T-shirt contests, Lingerie matches, pudding matches, any Diva Search segment, etc.

Jericho's return.
No, really. I made all my friends watch it, touting about how awesome Jericho was and how great it was going to be. Then he...well he did nothing.

The end of the Casket match between Taker and Yokozuna at Royal Rumble 1994. I had forgot how bad it was, and watched it with a non-wrestling friend again recently. I have never been so embarrased!

This doesn't exactly count as defending being a fan, but my wife asked me to name my top 10 list of wrestlers. For the life of her, she couldn't understand why I still respected Benoit's work (his work, not the person).

Slightly off-topic, but I don't get the hate for Katie Vick...
It was comedy even in kayfabe, as it was Triple H mocking Kane. As I see it, it wasn't like they showed Kane humping the "actual body" of Katie. [that would have been dreadful], it was just a rib. Probably not in great taste either, but it was MEANT to be over-the-top for kayfabe standards too.
My 2 cents on it
