DVDs obsolete in 3-4 years?
Yeah whatever...
As if they expect us to buy again, in Blue-Ray at twice the price of a DVD all the crap we have on DVD already.
The improvement in quality hardly requires that, so unless you're a movie buff with tons of spare money, I can't see a valid reason for burning your DVD collection just because *they* decided it's time to splash some thousands bucks to get a slightly better visial experience.
Speaking of VHS, I think it's a bit of a shame. For tape it-watch it-tape on it again purposes, VHS was a good method.

Well, you knew it would happen eventually. I personally think Blu-Ray won't last too long either. I think once they get stronger internet capabilites, digital distribution will be the next step. And I think that's coming very soon, with Microsoft already devoted to that method with the 360 and all three console companies talking about distributing their entire game libraries online. I know that might not seem related, but a game takes alot more room than a movie, even an HD one. And if they can do full games digitally, movies would take little to no effort. I really can't see that happening. Just because people like to have things that are tangible. It's also good to know that when I'm forced to wander the seemingly never ending women's clothing and shoe shops with the girlfriend that I can duck out and recover in a cd,dvd, and video game place. Won't be able to do that if it's all online.

My ex girlfriend has had my VCR for about 2 years now, so I haven' watched tapes in a long time anyways. And on Sunday I bought my first Blu-Ray disc, so I'm already working on the transition.
Now, I just have to buy a Blu-Ray player. (Yes, I'm an idiot, and a sucker for a good deal. $20 for Dark Knight on Blu-Ray was too good to pass up even if I can't watch it yet.)

That reminds me I have to buy another video player, I'll cry if I can't watch my beautiful unblurred attidude era (and ONS1) tapes, even if they have seen better days, poor WM17 tape.

VHS will never die. Some of us hold on to our tapes like Linus' security blanket.

Yeah, and as a frequent shopper of the local Dollar General... those were just some of the last runs of VHS. Like Austin Powers: Goldmember, etc. My sister's bought quite a few there... namely a ton of Star Trek: TNG episodes. DG is moving over to DVD fairly well. They currently have a few Widescreen copies of the Simpsons Movie for $6. I got NBK for $5. I remember when fye got rid of theirs, lowering the price down to 99 cents. After they did that, I went in and snagged The Jackie Chan three pack (Rumble in the Bronx, Mr. Nice Guy and Operation First Strike). Since it had one UPC, they had to ring it up for .99. I also got a few wrestling videos they had left, stuff like the Discovery Channel special with Cena in training camp and Ultimate Pro-Wrestling Training.

How superior can Blu-Ray versions of Star Trek or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Father Ted be to the regular DVD? Star Trek may be a bad example because I realize they touched up some special effects on but that's really more of a "one of these days if/when I have money to burn" purchases.

Yeah, I'm a bargain basement kung fu fan. I doubt they'll be moving to Blu-Ray anytime soon and even if they did, the only advantage would be being able to jam a ton more movies on one disc. Most of them so poor transfers, they rival 20 year old VHS tapes.

As for recording TV and the blank tape thing, guys, a DVD recorder isn't that expensive. The low-end Magnavox set at Wal-Mart is typically an even $100, and I'll bet that cost will be coming down any day since DVD burning technology seems to be getting more and more available. Get re-writable discs, and there you go. I've been recording my wrestling shows while I'm at work for well over a year this way, and only gone through a handful of discs (the only time I've had to replace them is when someone borrows an episode and I don't get it back).

I had no problem making the transition from VHS to DVD. But that's as far as I go. Screw you, Blu-Ray. I'll go without.

Its been said before, but Blu Ray players play DVD's and upconvert them, so its its not like the VHS to DVD transition in any way whatsoever. My rule with Blu Ray is simply not to get anything I already own on DVD for it...with the exceptions of things I really really love. People might as well accept thats its gonna become the standard, just wait until its in your price range. DVD's were 30 something dollars too when they first came out, and Blu Ray is only 2.5 years old so far.

Does anybody remember the first VHS tape they rented or brought? Rented - Freedom Force and Wacky & Packy cartoons Owned - Godzilla Vs. Megalon (with added movie The Snow Creature), an ep of the 70s Godzilla cartoon and a 3rd tape I can't remember at the moment, got them all for christmas at the same time. Believe it or not, there's still a store in Houston that specializes only in renting and selling Beta tapes.

I guess it was time. I guess I need to get a DVD recorder soon as I still tape shows on VHS. I really need to digitize my MAAAAASSSIVE collection of television shows on Beta and VHS. Hell, I still have a LASERDISC player and movies that I use once every 3 - 4 years. I have fond memories of Beta and VHS. I'm starting to hold off on buying DVDs now that alot of stuff are coming out on BluRay now. I don't want to buy new DVDs so that I won't have to re-purchase films I already own. DAMN NEW TECHNOLOGY!

Damn it. Society is just trying to make me that old guy huh? Remember that guy you knew who listened to records and watched old movies on an old film projector? I am the new guy you know who watches VHS(and I guess DVD now since it is going out) and still listens to cassettes and CDs. OMG I'm the old school guy. That kind of makes me feel cool.

Does anybody remember the first VHS tape they rented or brought? I believe the first one I rented was a Ninja Turtles tape. My dad used to go to the Video Vendor 3 and rent movies (he used to have 3 in the area in the heyday... he sold one, the other basically got killed off from Blockbuster and last I knew he still runs his first shop, cool dude.) I do know the first I bought was a pre-rental from him. I convinced my dad to buy me UHF for $8.95 in an advance for two weeks of taking out the garbage. I still have that VHS, despite the fact that the last time I tried to watch it well... it played like total crap. I refuse to part with it, though.

First Rented: I'm pretty sure it was Friday the 13th Part VII: New Blood
First Bought: Think it was The Best of Dan Aykroyd on Saturday Night Live, that I got at Suncoast (boy do I miss that store) in Yorktown Heights, NY.
