As inspirational as they were to other bands, they weren't really all that great at times, but man, when they hit things just right, they were awesome:
Bull in the Heather:
Drunken Butterfly:
Covering the Carpenters' "Superstar":

Spent many a happy time listening to these chaps. My washing machine t-shirt died many years ago, served me well.

People should find the '4 Tunna Brix' EP, wherein they cover four tracks by The Fall (My New House, Psycho Mafia, Rowche Rumble and Victoria, well, the last one being a Kinks original, but still...).
Good stuff and they do some nice takes on those songs. As for their original stuff, I can't really get into it.

'The Diamond Sea' is a 19-minute surmation of what I want to do with music.

They never sold out and never had any "hits." They were on a major label but they never really promoted or pushed them probably because they knew they were a tough sell to the masses. I'm kinda baffled as to why a major label would keep a band like this on its roster for so long. I hate to say this but I definately wouldnt want to hang out with someone who was a hardcore Sonic Youth fan. I like some alternative rock here and there but these indie rock loving hipster dorks are too much. Juno anyone ?

I enjoy Sonic, and I don't have a problem with Youth, but personally I"m not a fan of Sonic Youth.

i think they are amazing and very inspiring doing music on there own terms and just branching out with there sounds all the time . There a band to easily love or hate depending on your prefrence and what side of them you hear.

Ah, 'just noise.' The ever-worthwhile contribution to threads about bands we don't like.

Didn't they release an album on the Starbucks label? How does that stand with their whole independent, DIY etc stance?

So did Paul McCartney. But he's a Beatle. His credibility will ALWAYS be there. I'd say Sonic Youth probably have the same benefit.
