Also the fact that Regal WANTS Punk to win the tournament only pushes things further. If Punk does win the tournament AND the title, would that make him the guy who has obtained his Triple Crown the fastest? That would be Diesel, who got all three belts in 1994 after debuting in 1993. And yeah, I like the whole tournament thing too.

It's a really good idea. It adds a lot of credibility to the title. I personally love tournaments, so I'm excited.

I hope the winner of the tourny loses to Regal to make regal look like the unstoppable champion and make this look like a miracle. WWE needs more matches where the champ retains the title no matter what the challengers has done. That way, the fans would hate the champ more and more to the point they would tune in to hope that the champion would lose someday. I smell more viewers! Anyone agree?

I like WWE tourneys in general and wish they would have more of them.
There's usually a surprise or two along the way and having a surprise during a midcard match is a serious rarity in the E these days.

I got the vibe they're actually trying to establish the IC title again. Would be a good idea.

That kind of booking only happens if said champion's name is Triple H, I'm afraid.

I'd like either Miz or Morrison to win it, creating tension between the two.

I agree, any time there's any sort of remote buildup to a midcard title match...the title changes hands and the new title holder proceeds to do nothing with it for 3+ months.

It's all just a ploy to hype up the DVD. They don't really care about the championship! Other than that I like the tournament thing. yeah i'd love to see them use the ic belt like they did years ago but with 3 world belts now that aint gonna happen, i fear this is just a dvd shill technique.

If Punk does win the tournament AND the title, would that make him the guy who has obtained his Triple Crown the fastest? Technically he already obtained the triple crown: ECW title, World Heavyweight champion, and Tag Champion. 2 World titles and 1 Tag title does not a Triple Crown make.

I dont see how this tournement makes the IC title seem more important. Its a series of filler matches with the added caviat that the winner gets an IC title shot which people seem to get on a weekly basis anyway. Its not like someone has to climb a ladder to get the shot. I scratched my head when they announced it. I thought maybe Regal botched a wellness test. I heard Regal was sick on Monday night, maybe its just a way to keep him on TV while giving him time to recoup without having to wrestle.
Either way I think anyone assuming this means a renissance of the IC title will wind up being disapointed. They had a pretty solid angle going with Santino who was a great cowardly heel doing his countdown to the longest IC title reign. Towards the end it probably would have drawn decent heat. But instead the WWE opted to put the title on a guy whos never been over outside of this forum who looks completely ridiculous in his Fanny Farmer 1927 Coney Island Bathsuit. Theres some determination to make the title relavent.

Meh...
Why are the Tag Team Champions in it?
Why are Kane and Mysterio in? They were part of the Scramble match for the WHC title just a few months ago...
Why are Miz and Morrison in? Wasn't Morrison half-feuding with HBK already?
See, that's what I hate about WWE and their booking for midcard titles: suddenly main eventer are fighting for a lower belt, tag teams and tag team champions too... People who already have a program going on gets thrown in for no real reason...
Hell, NONE of the guys into the tournament actually needs the IC title...

I got the vibe they're actually trying to establish the IC title again. Would be a good idea. I noticed on Monday that combined with the tournament, as well as the commentary provided by Patterson and Regal during the matches, just how much they were talking up the IC Title to a level I've never seen before, or at least not in the last 5 or 6 years. I'm pretty sure it's being talked up to coincide with the release of the new History of the Intercontinental Championship DVD...I'll bet all the prestige slathered upon it now will go away as soon as they stop pushing the DVD.
