As a Yankees fan. I'm kind of disgusted the way Hank and Boras are killing baseball. Im not to proud of i either but you had to see it coming after missing the playoffs last year and billion dollar stadium opening up this year. I can't imagine what tickets are going to cost this year

Padres GM Kevin Towers said the club will still listen to offers for Jake Peavy, but is no longer actively trying to move him.

The Red Sox are closing in on a deal with free agent Brad Penny, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports. www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2008/12/sox_near_deals.htmlAccording to Boston.com's Amalie Benjamin, the deal for Penny would be a one year contract worth $5 million, with $3 million in performance bonuses. Also, she is reporting that the Red Sox are close to welcoming back catcher Josh Bard, in a one year, $1.6 million contract with a team option. I cannot state enough how much I love the Brad Penny contract. He had an injury ravaged 2008 and was shut down for the entire month of September, but he was lights out in 2007 (16-4, 3.03 ERA). If he performs at even one iota of his 2007 levels, he'll make a one year, $8 million contract seem like the bargain of a lifetime. In his career, Penny is 94-75 with a 4.06 ERA.

The performance bonuses for Penny wouldn't start to kick in until he reaches 160 IP. The guy had a good 2007, but man did he stink last year. The Dodgers pretty much bashed his work ethic, saying his shoulder wasn't the major problem. Although I guess it wouldn't be so bad to give him an incentive laden 1 year deal and hope that he works his ass off for a new contract.
Josh Bard.... Christ, man. I'm praying for a bounce back year.
I'll be pretty upset if the best things this team does to improve for 2009 is sign Josh Bard and Brad Penny.

Mark Hendrickson is close to making a deal with the O's. "Sorry about not luring Tex, here's Cesar Izturis and Mark Hendrickson!" How do people stay O's fans?

I'll be pretty upset if the best things this team does to improve for 2009 is sign Josh Bard and Brad Penny. And it will still be 150% more then the Rangers do

Have you never played the game of "Life"? That space that splits between "secure retirement" and "multi-millionaire" is actually Oriole Park At Camden Yards. Peter Angelos scours the line headed to security, picks up all the guys with name value (and nothing else) and signs them to insane contracts. Baltimore Orioles: "If you were good 10 years ago and need a place to play, give us a call."

Via his blog, Murray Chass reports that Mark Teixeira didn't sign with the Red Sox because "he just didn't want to go to Boston."
According to Chass: "He and his wife, especially his wife, didn't want to live in Boston. If necessary, they were going to choose the big bad city of New York, and they did."

Somewhere in the vault, there's a contract with BJ Surhoff's name on it, in case they need a pinch hitter.

According to Chass: "He and his wife, especially his wife, didn't want to live in Boston. If necessary, they were going to choose the big bad city of New York, and they did." The baseball equivalent of "NEWZ". The main issue was money. Of all the competitive teams that offered Teixeira a contract, New York's was the largest. If Boston had outbid the Yankees, I guarantee you he would've ended up a member of the Red Sox.

Even odder is that he'd be our RF when we clearly have Ryan Church. Church+ for Peavy? Church+ for Jones and Kemp? Posturing for Manny or Derek Lowe? What the hell is going on here?
