Shawn Michaels v. Ric Flair. I read and heard so many say that this was the best match of the year, when it simply was not. I didn't think it clicked as well as Flair's matches with Hunter. Some may blast me for saying this, but I think Shawn's match with Hogan was better. I think Undertaker and Edge's match to close the show was better. There were some times when the timing was off and there were some blown spots (not that they didn't cover them well). The match was pretty good, but it is not one of the greatest of all time nor is it one the very best matches of the year.

If you watch the match for what it is.... a wrestling match, it's not that good. But as most would agree... it's the story in the match that makes it one of the best of the year.

I'm never going to be the person to tell someone they're over rating something they liked, that isn't my style, but one match this year does stand out as one that I seem to be a very small minority against. The storyline build was excellent, the promos and video packages were flat out amazing, but then they got to the Rumble itself...
I was expecting SO much more out of Jeff and Randy. It's kind of funny, arguably the most important match of Jeff's career at the time turned out to be well down the list of his best overall for 08. To me anyway. I see people all the time saying how great it was, but I just saw it as another mediocre match where the build totally exceeded the final product.
As for Shawn/Flair, still miles ahead of anything else I saw this year. WWE, ROH, anything. Emotion carries a hell of a lot in wrestling.

Yeah like MGH said this is all personal picks of course. Like i loved Flair vs HBK thought it was match of the year, but Crappler didn't which is perfectly fair. Not every match is going to be loved by all.
Here are some of hte matches that i didn't love as much as everyone else did. Keep in mind i actually do like most of these matchs
Undertaker vs Edge WM 24 - just found it to slow starting, but worked to a great finish. Great just not Match of the Year worthy in my books
Evan Bourne vs Rey Mysterio Raw - good back and forth match, but i just wish they would have had more time and on PPV, were i really feel like a Match of the year could be had
Jeff Hardy vs Jericho Raw Feb. 25th - I just don't get the big deal on this one
Bastista vs Cena - Way better then i thought it could be, but still lacking just that something something.
Jeff Hardy vs Triple H No Mercy - SOLID match no question! But i think the Dec. PPV one was better even if it was Triple Threat.

I also have a hard time dealing with the idea of 'overrated' or 'underrated' especially in terms of describing wrestlers, but I think it makes a little more sense with matches. I also agree that Orton/Hardy just wasn't as great as some make it out to be. Hardy had better matches this year with Umaga, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H (and you could make a case for his match with Jericho being better too).
I agree that the story of Ric Flair having to win his matches or retire was compelling, but I have to agree to disagree about his last match being one of the main contenders for match of the year. To me, Shawn had a much better match later in the year with Chris Jericho and Ric Flair had better matches in the previous years with Hunter.

You know, a month ago I would have said it was the Shawn/Jericho ladder match. I watched it the night of the PPV and felt so let down that their feud was going to end on that note. I hadn't watched it again after that, not bothering to factor in that at the time it was 4 in the morning, I couldn't sleep, and I was cranky. No mood to be watching a PPV.
A friend of mine kept on me about it, so I watched it again a couple of weeks ago. Watching it when I was in the right frame of mind, I saw how great a match it was. Won't put it above the Unsanctioned Match, but still up there.

I loved the Shawn/Jericho ladder match (I think I had it listed first on a certain list I sent to...someone). It is certainly true that judging the quality of matches is subjective and someone's perceived "great match" could be a "forgettable match" to someone else.

Jeff vs Orton was very disappointing.
But I still loved the ending. The RKO out of nowhere was sick, in fact it made my top 5 for moments of the year.

The ending of Flair and Michaels was no doubt epic and one of the highlights of the year. But the match as a whole I did find to be a bit blah, and way overrated.

Flair/Michaels...my god Flair/Michaels. I just couldn't give a excretory matter about the match and the emotion in it. You are one angry, angry man. I'd say the Shawn/Y2J match from Great American Bash. A lot of people seemed to like it, but it was honestly, to me at least, 5 minutes of decent wrestling. Followed by 20 minutes of Jericho beating down Shawn.

Taker/Edge, idk i guess the match was iite, but it wasnt so great compared to Flair retiring/Orton retaining, and the exciting MITB IMO, and it was just like when Taker won the WHC at Mania 23

Edge/Taker @ Summerslam.
I loved Edge v. Taker at WM & ONS. And while their match at Summerslam was very good, it just didn't live up to the expectation of their other matches, and didn't live up to the hype that the IWC gave it. The match was good, but the ending bothered me. I understand it was Undertaker putting Edge through the same hell that Edge had done to Taker over the past year, but it was too one-sided towards the end for me. And the post-match antics were laughable. Good match, but it doesn't live up to their prior encounters.

Even though it's been said, I have to say that, while post-match of Flair/Micheals was awesome, the rest was just meh. I could not suspend my disbelief, because I knew it was Flair's finale. The emotion in the match was good, and I know that was the whole point, but the old line of "if you suspend your disbelief for just one second then it worked" line seems reversed. I couldn't, so therefore, it really didn't work for me.
I've heard the argument of "it had to be Micheals to get the emotion", but I disagree. Hell, I watched Flair work a damn fine, emotional match with Carlito of all people, and felt more about that match than I did the Mania match.
It's probably just personal distaste, but seeing Micheals, as gifted as the man is in the ring, play the "tortured soul babyface" just kills me because it comes off as so damn fake. It comes across as "tell me a lie" all over again.

I loved Flair/Michaels, but I see why other people might not. It just had me hooked.
Overrated? Probably Taker/Edge HIAC. I don't like Cell matches at the best of times and this (and I never thought I would say this last year) showed why Vickie is a vital part of Edge at the moment. I didn't want to see him get beat half as much without her around.
