In the Rise and Fall of ECW, they told us that WCW never acknowledged ECW and never even called the company by name but instead informed us that it was a "A Major Independent Promotion That Wrestled In Bingo Halls" or "The Barbewired City". I checked out a video of Mike Awesomes debut in WCW and the commentators were yelling....he's an ECW World Champion.....infact they yelled it multiple times and he beat the holy crap outta Kevin Nash (kayfabe) ;D.lol Now this was shocking and I rewinded the video and heard it once again as I could not believe that WCW was taking ECW's name as it was non-existant to them previously as TNA is non-existant to WWE. Do you remember incidences when WCW acknowledged ECW?

Probably the only time, and I didn't see why they should've mentioned them. I know Tenay did refer to Stevie Richards as Raven's former tag team partner "in another organization" in 1997, but that was it.

You got to keep in mind here, they were both sinking ships at the time. WCW was really trying to get a "rub" from anyone, they were hoping to get the hardcore ECW crowd.

By 2000, everything was out the window, but I think it wasn't until then that they ever actually mentioned it.

I think the only time they mentioned it there was an attempt to embarrass ECW, by taking their world champion.
I guess they might of wanted to savor that, after the utterly humiliating time they lost Flair and he took their title belt with him. Ouch.

The way they mentioned it was as if it was a surprise. Not a "Hah, we got your champion, losers" reference. I didn't see anything wrong with it.

If I remember correctly there was talks of a WCW-ECW talent exchange or "new invasion".
That'd be interesting cause ECW was an independant organization, and yet was so influential that the entire organization was like this rogue wreslter, referenced and showing up when needed on the competition.
I mean Cactus jack and kevin sullivan in 93, candido/kaientai/sytch/furnas and lafon in 197.
I never though ECW would work with WCW considering all the hate, but that'd be interesting for an entire company to change allegiance from WWF to WCW.
Either that or WCW was just buying a bunch of ECW guys and planning their own ecw invasion without heyman and styles. Which, if true, would explain why Bischoff doesn't get the pass that Vince does on raiding talent.

I remember Hall, Nash, and Bischoff doing commentary once on Nitro, and Nash said something along the lines of, "No disrespect to WCW, they are a great company. In fact, if I had to rate all the companies, it would be
1. nWo 2. WCW 3. Japan 4. ECW"
And he actually said the name of ECW.

I know they gave credit to the WCW guys every so often, but I don't recall ECW ever being mentioned on the air.

Of course, they only did it to slight WWF, by basically saying that even ECW was better than WWF.

I saw it on 24/7 last year and I got a kick out of it.
Anyway, I always hated when Paul said that WCW didn't refer to Awesome as champ or put over the title defense when they obviously did both.

Which, if true, would explain why Bischoff doesn't get the pass that Vince does on raiding talent. Kaientai was brought in for the 6 man they were still part of Michinoku Pro Wrestling and I believe it was after that they signed with Vince. Candido flat out quit the WWF so there wasn't a talent exchange there, Sytch however was on loan fron Titan until she left in '98. I think Kevin Sullivan's tenure in '93 he was an indy wrestler at the time before returning to WCW to help brother evaD, and before becoming a member of ECW, Cactus' first match with Sabu at Hostile City Showdown '94 (where he spit on the WCW tag belt after losing his match) was the result of ECW threatening WCW with a lawsuit for co-promoting "When Worlds Collide" with AAA since ECW released a video tape of that name (which oddly enough I believe was the event that had Anderson and Eaton making appearances on opposite ends of a tag match). Speaking of lawsuits, I think part of Heyman allowing Awesome out of the contract that Heyman himself may or may not have violated by bouncing checks (based on whether or not Awesome's contract had the 30 day grace period to try and make good on the $) besides not allowing Awesome to disgracing the ECW world title belt on WCW TV, go back to ECW for one last match to job the belt, I believe they also had to promote the that last title match on Nitro but only halfheartedly did it when Scott Hudson asked "doesn't he have a title to defend" and by mentioning ECW by name. Also you need to consider that at this time Russo was cowriting with Bischoff and had a thing for pandering to the 'net marks and the 'net marks loved ECW.

I remember the whole Hall and Nash thing as well. I'm not sure that they actually mentioned ECW by name, but they did at least reference the company. It may have been during a Nitro in Philly. It would have been not too long after Bischoff turned heel and joined the nWo.
