Next: SyFy to start airing Sex and the City reruns to "widen their demographic". You must have missed the story arc where Samantha was abducted by aliens and Charlotte was possessed by Satan I might consider watching the show if that happened. Though that is one massive might.

As long as it is pronounced the same and has the same science fiction content I don't mind.
Not like I watch much of the channel anyway but I do enjoy watching science fiction and was always glad that there was a channel for it.
Technically I think the name change is unnecessary. Just for the fact that they are getting a really big viewership now is amazing. A niche network like Scifi was never thought to do as good as it did.
Also I'd like to say that with the shows like Big Bang Theory and being in the age of computers the word geek is no longer looked down on in society like it use to be. Mostly because those "geeks" pretty much control everything now.

Uh.....why change the name? To distance themselves from the image of geeks? They DO realize that geeks are the majority of the people that watch the channel, right?
I mean f***, Battlestar Galactica, one of their most watched shows, is a major pillar of the geek culture.
Whether the heads of the network like it or not, geeks MADE Sci-Fi what it is.

Who f***ing cares if you can "own" a word? I mean it is a f***ing word for crying out loud! Besides, they COULD own "Sci-Fi Channel", which is the channel's real name. So it is all moot.

I don't like this.
I thought the we have moved on from treating geeks like social outcasts.

Bonnie Hammer is running the whole network. Of course it's gonna be stupid as hell.

Will this include the Sci-Fi channel in Australia?
Or is it just the U.S one?

You can change excretory matter's name all you want...it's still going to be excretory matter. True. Not to mention that replacing "I" with the letter "y" is about as cosmetic as you can possibly get. Chyna Rhyno Womyn's Lyb It sucked and was redundant in all cases. This one will be no different. Putting lipstick on a pig, so to speak. That'll be the first Syfy original picture- ' Giant Lipstick Wearing Pig vs. Casper Van Dien'

This news fails on every possible level. This is comign from someone who doesn't even watch the Sci-Fi channel outside of Twilight Zone or ECW.

Seriously, the more I read these things... Do they grow TV executives in some special lab or something? I mean the guy says they had an idea for a science-fiction themed network, named it "Sci-Fi" to sound "cooler" than science fiction, then immediately started distancing themselves from their limited name. They had an IDEA for a network with a science fiction theme. They named it SCI-FI. And then immediately decided the name Sci-Fi limited their potential audience for their SCIENCE FICTION themed network. THEY HAD AN IDEA FOR A... I mean seriously. Am I missing something? This has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Somebody help me out, I have to be misunderstanding this. But after reading it I'm just so hard-pressed to put an intelligent thought together.
"We decided "Milk" brand milk was too limiting for potential milk drinkers, so we changed it you "Mylc."
(For the record I realize some true science fiction fans look down on the term "Sci-Fi" but I really don't think the general public gives a crap and it didn't sound like the guy was talking about that to me.)

And my guess is, they're positioning it for a format change, because once Galactica is gone, they are buttf***ed.
