Strange Question, but this happened to me on Sunday and I wanted to share it.
I was heading back from Thorpe Park (big theme park near where I go to Uni) seeing some old friends who invited me down and had an hour long train journey back. I had 'Hitman' with me so I was reading that for most of the journey.
The train stops at Woking to disconnect so it can go to my station and this woman steps on and sits near me complimenting my Marvel jacket I had on. We smiled a couple of times and it struck to me that she might want to speak to me. I finished one of the last chapters of the book and put it in my bag. Nothing really happened because I had no idea what I was to say so it got kinda weird because of it.
'You're shy' she said after a bit.
I just laughed a bit and said 'Well, I never know what to say with stuff like this'
'What's your star sign?'
I told her mine and she told me hers.
'What year were you born in?'
And that (very weird yet somehow normal) question started us off. I found out she was a young mother with a three year old kid and a nice boyfriend who was a few years older then her but she didn't care. She found out about me at Uni and what I do for a living and she kept telling me I was cute and how different I seemed from other people which was rather cool.
She got on the wrong train when we were disconnecting so she had to get off at the station before me. We said our goodbyes and she was gone. I'd probably never see her again, but it was fun while it lasted and gave me a big smile for a bit. Mostly because, well, it's not something usual you do on a train and it was nice to have some company on that journey back to my Uni flat.
Anyone had any experiences like that?

I had a memorable moment talking to a complete stranger. I ended up having to ride a roller coaster with a stranger, and she and I spoke a bit while we waited for the ride to start up. Had I been a little smarter and a lot braver, I'd have asked for her number, as she was kinda cute.

Dude listen to me: SHE WAS FLIRTING WITH YOU And you missed your oppourtunity, for shame I had the small hint she was. But note the story... SHE HAS A BOYFRIEND AND A KID! There are many things I am. Homewrecker is not one of them.

I only talk to them when they offer me candy from the driver's seat of a shady-looking van.
But seriously, a few weeks ago, I was in the liquor store looking for a bottle of wine (a gift to my sister). I don't know anything about picking out a good bottle, but fortunately there was a cute-looking older woman nearby that was shopping for wine as well. I asked her for some assistance, and we ended up having a 5-10 minute conversation. We went our separate ways afterward.

Usually when I travel. I like talking to people, and it's the best time to broaden your harizons.

Well, I'm living in Japan right now, so there's a bit of a language barrier. But sometimes I do, either with Japanese people or with other foreigners I happen to meet. For example, last week I was on a class trip to Kyoto, and while I was catching a quick lunch at a McDonald's (yeah, yeah, sue me), I chatted with an Italian couple who was in Kyoto for their honeymoon.

I met a Swedish dude at a Wendy's once. He was horribly stereotypical though...insanely tall blonde guy with an accent so thick you couldn't even cut through it.
Still an interesting fellow to talk to. From the sound of it, Sweden is a surprisingly interesting place to visit (or even live in).

On my bus ride back, this random guy started talking to me. And we talked about college and my graduate plans.
My grandfather is insane when it comes to talking to strangers, he lives for people. One time he had a 20 minute conversation with a guy who couldn't speak english, and didn't discover until after the guy left.

I do that sort of thing all the time. And I can chat with almost anyone. I got into a rather deep discussion with a guy one night about cartoons, and I found out after he had left that he was a skinhead.

I try not to. I hate pointless chit-chat with someone I'll probably never see again, unless of course, it was one of my customers. Then I have no problem with it.

The only people who talk to me in the street are bums or those nimrods who're always asking for signatures for whatever cause is fashionable this week.
But did that smoking hot woman at the burrito place talk to me today? Noooooooo!!!!!

This has happened to me a few times. As someone with Asperger's syndrome, it always feels like an achievement to me, especially since it gets easier every time. It's wonderful when it happens. Gives me hope that humanity aren't all assholes.

I don't typically initiate them, but there have been several times when a stranger has started talking to me and we ended up talking for several minutes.

You should never...EVER talk to strangers.
If someone you have never met before tries to talk to you, just scream, "AAAAAAAAH! RAPIST! HEEEEELP!"
