With stuff like this happening, I'm glad I abandoned my children a long time ago.

The United States of America. Silly Unitedstatesofamerican, that's a country, not a World. No, but it is indeed "the world" where such things are treated in such a way.

While I think giving her six years is ridiculous, the thread title and the sub-heading of the article itself are misleading. What this woman did is not "just a hug" or "a graze". The article states that the woman was accused of "running her hands through a 13-year-old boy’s hair and pulling the back of his head against her covered chest in the middle of a crowded game room." That's hardly a hug or a graze in my books.
Yes, we're all getting a little too sensitive these days about people getting touched or physical contact, but what this woman did is not an innocent gesture. She might have gotten out of trouble in this one if she didn't have a prior record. Granted it resulted in a hung jury, but the article states that "Rodriguez was alleged to have stood in a bathroom doorway while the boy fondled her breasts."
Is what she did sexual assault? Probably not. Is it rape? Definitely not. But is what she did a crime? Yes. I don't think she deserves six years, but she did commit a crime and she does have a previous record.

Mandatory minimum sentencing takes common sense out of the equation.
You simply can't judge every situation by a set standard or things like this are going to happen.

I better be careful the next time I high-five my nephews in public. Wouldn't want people to get the wrong impression.

I had a guy jump my shit because I was talking to my young son in the bath room.
Now granted he couldn't KNOW it was my kid at the time but I never realized simply speaking to a child through a closed stall door reminding him to flush was anything to get worked up about.
I got a little upset.

I had a guy jump my excretory matter because I was talking to my young son in the bath room. Now granted he couldn't KNOW it was my kid at the time but I never realized simply speaking to a child through a closed stall door reminding him to flush was anything to get worked up about. I got a little upset. Can't blame you, though. Problem is, these days, it seems a lot of people get the worst possible idea from a perfectly innocent action or statement, but this seems especially true when children or any things of a remotely sexual nature are involved. It seems that despite society becoming desensitized by a lot of things, they become more and more uptight and zealous yet latent at the same time. Remember what happened a few years ago to those college students--I believe it was at Duke--who pretty much got the sex offender treatment because a stripper accused them of sexually assaulting her? Their lives may have seemed entirely in ruin for a few years, because people jumped the gun, but now despite that, IIRC they get very little in return for the received treatment.

why is it that a woman who hugs a kid gets five years but a guy who rapes a kid can get as little as six months?

why is it that a woman who hugs a kid gets five years but a guy who rapes a kid can get as little as six months? Huh, you've got to show the case where it happened because most of the time, if a man goes as far as kissing his own child, people want to send him to the electric chair.
