I'll miss the flood of obviousness coming from the tv.

The Attitude Era of NFL is finally over. So does that make Bret Farve Stone Cold and John Madden The Rock? Anyway, I agree with MGH. I like Madden for what he is and everything, and he is a legend, but he was pretty much on auto-pilot the last few years. Actually, I've been bemoaning the complete lack of good commentary for sports for some time now, and the same could be said of Al Michaels. Well, I don't remember Rock blowing Austin 24/7. As for Madden, I won't deny the guy knows his stuff, but he really hasn't been that great for the past several years. Jim Rome said whenever Madden was in talks for MNF that honestly, who cares? How many people tune into a game for the announcers? That's how I felt, he was an announcer, nothing special. Also he should have gone into the Hall of Fame as an ambassador or announcer. He wasn't that great of a coach. Another good analogy somebody used was, it's like we should put Gruden in after he won the Super Bowl. Again, I have nothing against the guy, I just don't think he's the football god some people make him out to be.

Now who is going to tell me the team with the most points will probably win? That guy does FOX Baseball - Tim McCarver. Without John Madden, who is gonna tell us what a stud this big fat 350 pound offensive lineman is, just because he can play in a Green Bay snowstorm when it's ten-below outside without sleeves? Or who is gonna tell us what a "heckuva nice guy" so-and-so is? Or how so-and-so is "one of the all-time true gentlemen of football." I'd yell back at my screen, "C'mon John, aren't there any jerks in the game? They can't all be nice guys."

This is just...wrong. I can't even say "Boom!" without feeling sad. John was always fun to listen to, even if the obviousness would dominate his commentary, such as the time he explained to us what a 3-4 defense was by taking a minute to explain how there are "three guys here" and "four guys there." I hope he has an enjoyable retirement and isn't just pulling a Farve because of how much he liked him "John Madden has changed his mind and is coming out of retirement. He wants to either commentate on NBC or be traded to the NFL Network..."

I'll miss him.
Sure, he'd say a lot of obvious stuff, but I'd take that any day over other announcers who try and sound smart, and end up sounding really dumb, or say things that just aren't true at all.
And I know when I first started watching football, Madden's commentary helped me a bit.

Poor Frank Caliendo. There goes his entire career based on mocking Madden.
