Development time for ET (and I mean the whole process, from the first meeting to discuss how to make the game until the release): 5 weeks Development time for Duke Nukem Forever: 12 freaking years. It better get released and be GOOD, or this will indeed be the biggest joke in gaming history.

Games don't have to reach "joke" status by just being in development for a long time you know, there are different criteria. ...such as triggering the videogame crash, maybe?

Blaming the entirety of the game crash on E.T. is like blaming the downfall of WCW on Vince Russo. It may be PART of the reason, but terrible ideas, ludicrous hopes in the number of sales and all in all poor marketing decisions were the real culprits in both fiascos.

Maybe so, but that was the straw that broke the camel's back. Without ET, we'd be in 5D virtual reality right now, on our PS8's and XBOX1millions.

The Great Videogame Crash lasted like 2 years until the release of the NES. If anything, we would have had one or two more Mario games, and the boring, QTE-filled pussified games that overflow the market nowadays would have arrived sooner.

I think if the game did get released, SsnakeBite (I capitalized the B ), it would be akin to Chinese Democracy. THe game has had so much hype it may never be able to live up to expectations.

At this point, if it was even remotely decent, it'd live up to most realistic expectations.

ET's not a joke so much as it's a massive disappointment and the quintessential example of what was wrong in the early 80s with video games. Plus, the whole market crash thing makes it less funny. If you really want to see how big of a joke DNF is... he're THE LIST (DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUN!) duke.a-13.net/

take two has decided to sue 3d realms! www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=a5LJCCRIwYg0also just to be clear Apogee Ltd. is the official name for 3d realms, not to be affiliated with Apogee LLC which is the company that's working on the duke nukem trilogy which will still be released... maybe. We should all be suing.

I actually have that famed issue of PC Gamer that featured DNF. I read it for a good laugh every once in a while.

If DNF is released, it truely will bring forth the apocalypse. I mean, Chinese Democracy was released, "Detox" by Dr. Dre looks to be released late this year or in early 2010, so that leaves DNF as the last of "The Holy Trinity".

Wait, was it really leaked, or released by Take-Two/former 3D Realms employees?

I chose my words poorly, what I mean is, is it really a leak or an official release? Because if they'r eofficially revealing the plot, that pretty much means they have no intention to hand the project to another developer to finish it.

Meh...
this stopped being about a videogame a loooong time ago.
It then turned into a pathetic technologic soap opera, where the producers have been kept promising The Greatest Game on Earth to at least two generation of gullible gamers.
The sad part is many still believe DNF will be released one day...
But anyway, the original mistake was trying to catch up with the 3D game engines. Hell, unless you decide to build your OWN revolutionary game engine, just pick ONE and use that one. Of course in the meantime a new and better engine will be released by other companies, but if your project is good and the game is awesome, who cares if the game engine is "2nd best"
It's like redesigning a car from scratch every time a competitor comes up wth an engine that consume 0.2% less fuel.
