Eh, I'm still waiting on The Wolf Man and Creature from the Black Lagoon remakes.
Oh, and everyone over at the Gorezone.net forums is harping on about how incredible Martyrs is, so I'm gonna have to give it a go eventually.

How high is your tolerance for brutal, depraved crap, DSR? And I don't mean like TOKYO GORE POLICE style ultra cartoonish stuff either. This is....it is the pinnacle of human suffering. I know...it's just a movie, but still. It's still haunting me tonight, the stuff in this movie. *BRRRRR* Watching Cronenberg's THE BROOD right now. Should have a review of it up later.

Update on the Scream reboot
Kevin Williamson is Twittering his way through the script and Neve Campbell's rejection.
He later deleted the "She won't do it. This sucks." message.

Something kind of dumb I thought of just now, but mildly interesting as well... Yesterday June 19th was the 175th anniversary of when The Crate from Creepshow was shipped to Amderson Hall.

My tolerance for stuff like that is pretty high but I gotta say, Tokyo Gore Police was effed up. That movie is everything that is super awesome with Japan and everything that is morally reprehensible with Japan (save for tentacles, unless I missed something) all wrapped up into one. Just when you saw something mind-blowingly awesome happen, something mind-scarringly horrible would happen soon thereafter. So I was at Best Buy earlier today and got in the mood for a good horror movie. Any recommendations for the noob? For some parameters, the only horror movies that get any sort of reaction out of me anymore are 70's Italian gore flicks, namely those of Lucio Fulci and Ruggero Deodato. I've pretty much ignored mainstream Hollywood horror of the past few years, not so much out of unexplained fanboy hatred like most horror hounds but the fact that most of it just looks plain boring. I don't mind remakes if they're done right, but honestly the last one I can remember seeing was the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The thing that made me the most mad about that movie was the fact that Jessica Biel ran through the rain for like 10 minutes in a tanktop and hid in a freezer, yet no pokies. I can suspend my disbelief when a jugular gets bitten out of someone's neck by a zombie but come on now!

I can suspend my disbelief when a jugular gets bitten out of someone's neck by a zombie but come on now! If you're relatively new to the genre, I don't think you can go wrong with the Friday the 13th series...they're the first movies that I even remember watching, and they warm you up to the cheesy charm that is '80s slasher flicks. And while they vary wildly in quality, they serve as an excellent springboard to everything that lays in wait. If you're a little more experienced, give Audition, Let the Right One In or Ringu a try. Not quite as in-your-face - just build, build, build up to a big climax. Really, though, it all just depends on your personal tastes. That's what's so great about the horror genre - everyone (you know, the "normals") like to pidgeonhole the entire genre into one thing, but really, there's so much variety and so many subgenres within the horror tag that it can even become CONFUSING at times.

Damn, I missed the anniversary! I had a similar complaint watching the new TCM. Fulci and Deodato, eh? Are you familiar with Umberto Lenzi's work at all? He's done a few cannibal films, a la Deodato (or rather, he paved the way for Deodato, since his film The Man from Deep River, kicked off the Italians' craze for cannibal movies). At any rate, Lenzi's giallo Eyeball (you might be able to find a VHS, its unavailable on DVD), the zombie picture Nightmare City (doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but its certainly fun), and the aforementioned Man from Deep River (which I haven't seen yet, but from what I've read, its worthwhile to those into that subgenre) would be my recommendations. And hell, throw in the Alien rip-off Contamination, by Luigi Cozzi. It's pretty fun.

My complaint about the TCM remake was that it totally sucked. Well, we're nearing the 30-page mark of another thread and you know what that means...hall of fame time. I think I have three good inductions lined up, although I'll have to include one of the obvious names this time. I was TRYING to shy away from the more obvious choices, but then again, they're obvious choices for a reason. Deserving normally equals easy.

Still though, when a movie sucks, nipples usually help. Is thread 4 gonna be In Space (like Leprechaun 4), the Final Chapter (like Friday the 13th 4), Ghost of/Bride of/House of (like many old school Universal sequels), Bloodlines (like Hellraiser 4), or something... else?

Yeah, it depends who notices that we've reached that 30-page mark first. I actually have something else in mind that wasn't listed, DSR, as I'm sure Guy does as well. *race to the finish line* Crap. I just realized that this also means I have to change my avatar, sig and screen name, as per my usual gimmicks.

In honor of Father's Day, I have to ask: How many of you have actually seen the original STEPFATHER? The remake is getting all sorts of attention over at MySpace (both Trailer Park and Myspace Horror) so I thought I'd ask.
Myself, I haven't seen the original in quite some time, but I remember it being a pretty bad movie. I mean, "evil parent" movies never usually deviate from formula, and this one was no different. And you know, the biggest strike against these "slasher in the family" films just might be the fact that, if you LIVE with the person, it's kind of hard NOT to notice that they're trying to f***ing KILL you 24/7. Whether it be a hand grenade in a hamburger, or razor blades in your Rice Krispies, you kind of ought to pick up on the fact that this person wants you dead after the first TEN attempts on your life. However, these films require the non-murderous family members to remain blithely oblivious for at least the first thirty minutes, which often results in some truly forced situations. I mean, if dear old Dad was last seen monkeying with your car on the pretense of checking your tranny fluid, and all of a sudden you have no brakes, you might think to ask him about that, instead of chalking it up to random chance. Especially if this occurs the day after he "accidentally" dropped that plugged in curling iron into your bathtub.

They really are all the same. There's only so much you can do with that formula. The only surprise with this film as far as I'm concerned is how in the BLAZES it got a theatrical release? I mean, honestly.

Not only did The Stepfather get a theatrical release...it became a freakin' FRANCHISE. That fact alone confounds me but, believe it or not, there's a significant fanbase that I think you can even say that the original movie has a cult following. Some of the more high-minded (read: snooty) critics even praise it due to the nature of its villain and the beat-you-over-the-head message that it features. Folks, Uncle Sam and Romero's Dead movies have got nothing on the [sarcasm]incredible subtlety[/sarcasm] that is this movie. Hell, even the movie's theatrical poster crams that message down your throat: "The All-American family...HE'D KILL FOR IT!" And while it's not really a horror film, I'd just like to say that the exact same problem plagues John Waters' Serial Mom pretty much word for word. At any rate, yeah, Rorschach, the movie is pretty bad. Even worse, I actually suffered through the entire series...in one day. I think it was a little over two years ago one Saturday that I had nothing better to do. Yup. I'm a loser. ;D Something funny, though - I really wish we could embed sounds into posts, because I'd really like Keenan Ivory Wayans' "MESSAGE" line from Don't be a Menace to play whenever I'm talking about a horror message movie.

How many of those films did there finally end up being? Five? Six? Seems like I want to say five. And it also seems like I want to say that the Djinn from WISHMASTER starred in at least one of them.

Wow...maybe, I don't know. But as far as I know, there's only the three that I watched - the original suckfest, the second film with the semi-redeeming quality that is Caroline Williams, and the direct-to-HBO movie with Robert Wightman taking over for Terry O'Quinn.
