Tom HanKs is the end all be all of surprise actors. Who would of thought that the same actor from Splash, Turner and Hooch, and The Burbs would have won a buttload of Oscars for films like Philadelphia and Saving Private Ryan. That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing him in a screwball comedy again.

That being said, I guess the closest he's come to comedy in a while is being a screwball as Woody, or his cameo on the Simpsons movie.. You are right, though, a comedy would be cool from him.

Ben Stiller in the Royal Tenebaums. Normally I hate anything associated with him...except his fox tv show. He turned in a very good performance here.

The last time an Actor actually surprised me was Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder.
Never once, in my entire life, did I expect to see him play a role like that... and do it so awesomely.

Jamie Foxx did a nice job as Muhammad Ali's trailer Drew Brown in Michael Mann's Ali biopic.
Believe it or not, I prefered his performance there to his in Ray. Not that he was bad or anything, but that Best Actor statue should have went to either Don Cheadle or Leo (someone else who won me over)

I'll second Leo DiCaprio. I wrote him off as a pretty boy until Catch Me If You Can. Now, it's not like I'll watch every movie of his but he's quite good. I used to hate Brad Pitt too for much of the same reasons, him being a popular prettyboy and me being a bitter ugly teenager. But now he's pretty much my favorite actor. Me too. For me and Pitt, it was "Fight Club". Amazing. I also really like Justin Timberlake as an actor. He is really funny. He made "The Love Guru" for me. Leo, I really, really liked in "Blood Diamond." Excellent movie. Courtney Love in some movie, I forget the name, she and her husband take some kid for ransom or something. She was excellent in there. EDIT: The movie was "Trapped" in 2002. Christian Bale, I never liked until "Equilibrium." If you haven't seen it, and/or love dystopian fiilms should definately see it. Possibly my favorite movie ever. I hope it's not against the rules, but Jim Caviezal from the Passion of the Christ. Amazing to me. That's all I'm gonna say about it. I'll think of more.

The film was very good as well from what I remember. Christian Bale, I never liked until "Equilibrium." If you haven't seen it, and/or love dystopian fiilms should definately see it. Possibly my favorite movie ever. For some reason or other I don't really like Bale, but love a lot of his movies. Equilibrium was great. You should make a favorite Dystopian movies thread. Love them so much.

If you look for the trailer for "Precious" on YouTube, you're gonna see Mo'nique and Mariah Carey in a totally different light. The movie comes out later this year, but I'm already psyched for crazy good performances in that movie.

not that I think he's mediocre but Jim Carey in anything serious. Growing up watching him in things like Ace Ventura and The Mask I was really impressed and plesently suprised he could do serious roles like in Man on the Moon and The Majestic This. Also, Robin Williams - although I think I'm part of a small group of people that likes him better in his more dramatic roles than in the comedies. (except for Man of the Year and Mrs. Doubtfire, both of which are quite good.)
