I've never heard of twitter until John McCain said he was getting one. Then EVERYBODY had to get one. I don't know if the Twitter phenomenon was directly attributed to John McCain creating his own Twitter account. Although it would be funnier than if it were Ashton Kutcher. As for the McLaughlin Group, I have to ask the OP. Why did you search for the McLaughlin Group on Twitter? That's like me looking for Gwen Ifill on Facebook.

The creation of Twitter was the Internet jumping the shark. The shark can't jump itself. Really? After EVERYTHING else that's happened in the internet, and I mean EVERYTHING, TWITTER is the one that does it? That's kind of like saying saving David Arquette win the WCW title being THE Jump the Shark moment of WCW. It's bad, but it's not THAT bad. And it makes me laugh that Twitter is getting all this hate when a few years ago everyone hated Facebook. Now half the world uses it. It's a status based updating service. It's not the be all and end all of anything. It's not THAT bad and I don't get the reasons for 'hating' it apart from people just hating something that's popular. I concur...here's a list I've put together of things that are worse than the McLaughlin Group on Twitter.... LOLcats Rick-rolling O RLY? Brian Peppers Chuck Norris Facts Laura Schlessinger nude pics Limewire GoDaddy.com Ashley Massaro's Myspace page IMDB message board Internet celebrities (Chocolate Rain, LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!, etc.) Paying for porn I'll add more later...

Only real good use for twitter came from some hospitals using them to give play-by-play updates on surgeries to a patient's loved ones (as opposed to having them wait hours and hours before the doctor finally came out of the operating room)
Other than that, it's stuff that we could do without (or just leave it to facebook)

Twitter is only as bad as who uses it, and only as good as who posts on it. It's like Myspace, Xanga, Livejournal, Facebook, etc., just a different format that is more convenient for a lot of people.

I feel that Twitter is only useful for celebrities who already have an army of people, or people who need to get the news out there before anyone else (politicians, news stations)
If your not one of those, then its just a tool to let people know your daily bedtime routine and whats on your dinner menu

If David Arquette's WCW title win became one of the most well known angles in WCW history and every mainstream fan loved it, then it would have been the jumping the shark moment. Twitter isn't a David Arquette. It's one of THE hottest internet fads currently going...and for the love of me I just don't understand why. First off, that's not even what the term means. Jumping the Shark means the moment when a show does something so desperate and so stupid, it 'jumps the shark' and starts to drop in quality. After Fonzie literally did it, Happy Days dropped in quality and eventually got axed. Thus, that's what the term means. If that moment in WCW got popular, then it would have helped more then hindered the company. If you ask alot of people, Twitter is not popular. Heck, this forum, I'll say most people don't understand it and thus hate it. The people who are using it aren't really mentioning it because, well, it's like Facebook. Noone says who they are on Facebook, we just eventually find out somehow. It's where it is right now because of its significance. Ignore the fact that people put up weird crap as their updates because Facebook does that too. The last few days on mine, people have put up the same kind of things you'd find on Twitter, 140 characters and all. People are using it because you can get any bit of news you want instantly. Breaking News Online exploded due to the fact that they can now put up stories as quickly as anyone else. They were one of the first to announce Michael Jackson's death as a recent major example even before TMZ 'broke' the news, leapfrogging almost every major news source out there. And not to get political, but the Iran Elections and the backlash from it gave many many Iranians a voice and means of expressing their views and for showing people what was going on in their country by the use of Twitter. The news media are in love with it because it's a means to get their news quicker. Instead of having to go onto their website and wait for something to happen, it comes to you. You don't need to check your email account or even watch the TV or go on their websites, you just check your phone or your page and see what comes out. They link to the pages they want you to see because the first characters hook you in. In a way, it's the evolution of media in general. People want news now, they don't want it a few minutes or hours after, they want it NOW. It encourages news sources to step up what they're doing and get content out to the people along with another means of gaining opinion on the subject. Celebrities use it in the same way they used MySpace then used Facebook and now used Twitter. It's a means to get themselves out there and, unlike Facebook, it cuts out the middle man. Notice the amount of rumours being called BS due to Twitter accounts? That's not a coincidence. It cuts out the bull and puts records clear. It's a threat to even the web tabloids out there that make money from this stuff. Not really. Why Twitter is popular is because it's to the point. You don't need to read someone's 2 paragraph essay to tell you something, they just say it. Kash uses Twitter to promote his movie. Instead of saying 'Hey guys, I've been working on this movie and this is the behind the scenes footage of it etc etc', he just says 'Behind the Scenes of Rose Coloured Miles' and the link. The people following him probably know what it is anyway so he's only appealing to them and getting them to spread the word out via other means. And let's call a spade a spade here. The majority of people use Facebook to meet up with people, thus Social networking. Most of them don't play the games or do surveys or fling sheep at each other, they use it for communication. Twitter is that shrunk down to an easier format. Why write 20,000 things when you can write it in 140 characters? I have no idea what else to say but I'll leave it as that. At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference if you use it or not, just like anything else in life, but I'm just putting the facts on the table.

The last few days on mine, people have put up the same kind of things you'd find on Twitter, 140 characters and all. That's the thing though. On Facebook, it's just a mere status update. On Twitter, it's the whole package. I can see where it has it's uses though thanks to the argument you presented, but on the whole I just don't ever think I could see any appeal in what's basically, to me, an extremely lazy social networking website that limits what you can type. I'll just agree to disagree here.

I'll just agree to disagree here. It's for people who want it just like that. Sometimes, I want it just that and don't want the other bits that clutter Facebook. On that note, we'll leave the argument there since, like you said, we won't change the minds of each other.

I vastly prefer "jump the shark" to "overrated" (or rather, way most people misuse it).

These are the only reasons I got on twitter. I fall to see what it provides that I can't do by updating my status on facebook.
