I was just listening to Sublimes 'Boss DJ' for the first time. Then I heard this lyric:
"Just let the lovin' take hold cause it will if you let it. Im funky, not a junky but I know where to get it."
I was into the song already, but as soon as I heard that I smiled and was instantly hooked on the song and have been listening to it a few times over the past hour or so.
Just thought I'd ask if there were any lyrics that have maybe really gotten you into a particular song. Maybe one that got you heard while already were listening, but just raised your interest. Or maybe a line you heard without hearing much of the song, and it made you want to hear the rest.
I'd list a couple more examples, but Im afraid this will get no-sold, so I just wanted to test the waters first...

The lyrics to Televators by The Mars Volta has some really deep lyrics.
Just as he hit The ground They lowered a tow that Stuck in his neck to the gills ----------------------------------------------- One day this chalk outline will circle this city Was he robbed of the asphalt that cushioned his face A room colored charlatan Hid in a safe Stalk the ground Stalk the ground You should have seen The curse that flew right by you Page of concrete Sting walks crutch in hobbled sway Auto-da-fé A capillary hint of red Only this manupod Crescent in shape has escaped
When I first heard this song I thought it was just about street violence. I later learned it was about a musician friend of the band who committed suicide.

Merideth Brooks - B**** "I'm a goddess on my knees".
There just one one way to take that line, and I was like... HELL YEAH, B****!

Talk about a dream Try to make it real you wake up in the night With a fear so real Spend your life waiting for a moment that just don't come Well, don't waste your time waiting Badlands, you gotta live it everyday Let the broken hearts stand As the price you've gotta pay We'll keep pushin' till it's understood and these badlands start treating us good
Badlands - Bruce Springsteen
I'd never been a big fan of the guy, I always viewed him as old due to my mum liking him, then I heard that on the radio..
Now I own all of his albums and are near fanatic over him ;D

Who let the dogs out (woof, woof, woof, woof) (woof, woof, woof, woof) (woof, woof, woof, woof) (woof, woof, woof, woof)
Who let the dogs out (woof, woof, woof, woof) Who let the dogs out (woof, woof, woof, woof)
(woof, woof, woof, woof)
When the party was nice, the party was jumpin' (Hey, Yippie, Yi, Yo) And everybody havin' a ball (Hah, ho, Yippie Yi Yo) I tell the fellas "start the name callin'" (Yippie Yi Yo) And the girls report to the call The poor dog show down
Who let the dogs out (woof, woof, woof, woof) Who let the dogs out (woof, woof, woof, woof) Who let the dogs out (woof, woof, woof, woof) Who let the dogs out (woof, woof, woof, woof)
After hearing the Baha Men tell their tale of love and love lost the first time I quietly weeped.

The Killers - This River Is Wild Leaves are fallin' down on the beautiful ground I heard a story from the man in red He said the leaves are fallin' down Such a beautiful sound Son, I think you'd better go ahead But you always hold your head up high 'Cause it's a long, long, long way down This town was meant for passing through Boy, it ain't nothin' new Now go and show 'em that the world stayed round But it's a long, long, long way down
You better run for the hills Before they burn Listen to the sound of the world Don't watch it turn I just want to show you what I know And catch you when the current lets you go
Or should I just get along with myself? I never did get along with everybody else I've been tryin' hard to do what's right But you know I could stay here all night And watch the clouds fall from the sky This river is wild This river is wild
Run for the hills before they burn Listen to the sound of the world Don't watch it turn But shake a little Sometimes I'm nervous when I talk I shake a little Sometimes I hate the line I walk I just wanna show you what I know And catch you when the current lets you go
Or should I just get along with myself? I never did get along with everybody else I've been trying hard to do what's right But you know I could stay here all night And watch the clouds fall from the sky Because this river is wild Godspeed ya, boy This river is wild
Now Adam's taking bombs and he's stuck on his mom Because that bitch keeps tryin' to make him pray He's with the hippie in the park coming over the dark Just tryin' to get some of that little girl-play
You better run for the hills before they burn Listen to the sound of the world Don't watch it turn I just want to show you what I know And catch you when the current lets you go
Or should I get along with myself? I never did get along with everybody else I've been tryin' hard to do what's right But you know I could stay here all night And watch the clouds fall from the sky The pain is hell in me tonight Because this river is wild Godspeed ya, boy This river is wild This river is wild Godspeed ya, boy This river is wild
Now the cars are everywhere Raisin' dust at the fairground I don't think I ever seen so many headlights But there's somethin' pullin' me The circus and the crew Well they're just passin' through Makin' sure the merry still goes round But it's a long, long, long way down

Billy Joel's "always a women" hooked me, mainly as my interpretation changes pretty regularly.
And she'll promise you more than the Garden of Eden Then she'll carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleedin' But she'll bring out the best and the worst you can be Blame it all on yourself 'cause she's always a woman to me
By the Libertines, still not sure why I like it so much. Cornered the boy kicked out at the world, The world kicked back a lot f***ing harder...

We chase misprinted lies We face the path of time And yet I fight And yet I fight This battle all alone No one to cry to No place to call home
My gift of self is raped My privacy is raked And yet I find And yet I find Repeating in my head If I cant be my own Id feel better dead

I know some day you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky but why, why, why Can't it be, can't it be mine?
"Black" became my favorite Pearl Jam song the instant I heard this part.

There's a club if you'd like to go you could meet somebody who really loves you so you go, and you stand on your own and you leave on your own and you go home, and you cry and you want to die
The Smiths - How Soon is Now?
I have never come home from a party wanting to die or anything but at the time there was nobody in England writing lyrics like this about feeling alienated.

'Did she wake you up just to tell you that it was only a change of plans' Neil Young - Harvest.
I knew instantly what it was referring to from some experiences in my family.

When you can't pull at 42's there has to be something wrong.

Ain't no rest for the wicked - Cage the Elephant
I was walking down the street When out the corner of my eye, I saw a pretty little thing approaching me. She said I never seen a man, Who looks so all alone, Could you use a little company? If you could pay the right price, Your evening will be nice, Or you can go and send me on my way, I said you're such a sweet young thing, Why'd you do this to yourself? She looked at me and this is what she said.
Oh, there ain't no rest for the wicked, Money don't grow on trees, I got bills to pay, I got mouths to feed, There ain't nothing in this world for free. I know I can't slow down, I can't hold back Though you know I wish I could, Oh no there ain't no rest for the wicked, Until we close our eyes for good.
Not even 15 minutes later, I'm still walking down the street, When I saw the shadow of a man creep out of sight, And then he swept up from behind, Put a gun up to my head, He made it clear he wasn't looking for a fight, He said give me all you've got, I want your money not your life, If you try to make a move I wont think twice, I told him you can have my cash, But first you know I've got to ask, What made you want to live this kind of life?
He said there ain't no rest for the wicked, Money don't grow on trees, I got bills to pay I got mouths to feed Ain't nothing in this world for free. I know I can't slow down, I can't hold back Though you know I wish I could Oh no there ain't no rest for the wicked, Until we close our eyes for good.
Now a couple hours past, And I was sitting in my house, The day was winding down and coming to an end, So I turned on the TV, And flipped it over to the news, And what I saw I almost couldn't comprehend, I saw a preacher man in cuffs Taking money from the church, He stuffed his bank account with righteous dollar bills But even still I can't say much Because I know were all the same, Oh yes we all seek out to satisfy those thrills.
You know there ain't no rest for the wicked, Money don't grow on trees, We got bills to pay We got mouths to feed Ain't nothing in this world for free. Oh no, we can't slow down, We can't hold back Though you know we wish we could. You know there ain't no rest for the wicked, Until we close our eyes for good.

The deputy sheriffs, the soldiers, the governors get paid, And the marshals and cops get the same, But the poor white man's used in the hands of them all like a tool. He's taught in his school From the start by the rule That the laws are with him To protect his white skin To keep up his hate So he never thinks straight 'Bout the shape that he's in But it ain't him to blame He's only a pawn in their game.

I know some day you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky but why, why, why Can't it be, can't it be mine? "Black" became my favorite Pearl Jam song the instant I heard this part. GREAT one. I'll add this by the Gaslight Anthem: "And we've been burned by all our peers Just from growing up around here Our fathers' factories marked our cards While Eden burned against the stars" This, from "Ball and Chain" by Social Distortion: "Well it's been 10 years and a thousand tears And look at the mess I'm in; a broken nose and a broken heart, an empty bottle of gin Well I sit, and I pray In my broken down Chevrolet While I'm singing to myself, There's got to be another way" There's more great lyrics in that one, but those, the opening verse, are the ones that hooked me. There's some great ones in their song "Don't Take Me For Granted" as well. Basically all of "The Pilgrim" by Kris Kristofferson. And basically all of "The Pilgrim" by Kris Kristofferson.
