You wanna check in under a fake name with your mistress, use John Smith.
You don't wanna give out the name of the person you met up with, use John Smith.
But just how common is the name?
Have you ever used it?

"Excuse me, I'm John Smith."
"John Smith 1882?"
"My Mistake."

according to this site there are 44,455 people in the US named John Smith, and that apparently searches from the US Census.

When I used to travel a lot more for business, I always used wrestling names when I checked in. (I hated being bothered, it was a very public job and people try to find you to bitch at you)
For some reason, I used Mark Mero the most. Probably just because it rhymed and nobody in their right mind would ever want to try and find (or even care about) Mark Mero.

It is quite the handy pseudonym when time traveling. Eight minutes in, and the thread is done.

Sounds risky, but you end up with great names. For example: Exit (I don't remember): Blake Chesterfield

My cousin's father is named John Smith. That's the only person I know with that name.
Sports-wise, there are some pretty common names. A lot of Williamses share the same first names: Jason Williams, Mike Williams, Roy Williams. Plus, every sports seems to have a Steve Smith in it at one point.

My uncle's name is John, his son is John Jr but we call him Jack, my dad's a Mike, and I'm a Michelle. Pretty common bunch of names there.

I'd probably use Rob Conway, the receptionist at the desk would fall asleep and I can take what I want ;D

I believe there was either a movie or tv show that took the name John Smith, looked up all the guys and did profiles on them to show how different lives people that have the same name live. Don't know what it's called though.

I've used Burt Reynolds on a few occasions. Nobody questions it.
