What are the best shows canceled before their time? Or ones that could have gone on a bit longer.
Deadwood (Total: 36 episodes) Pretty much the best western ever. It had two vital components any show needs, an ensemble cast and focus on the characters not the flash. It had great dialogue, excellent characters, amazing plots and a set to die for. HBO however canceled it before it's time, the ending although good for the season, didn't cap off the series. It left you with a,"Wait this is where it ends?" feeling.
Carnivale (Total: 24 episodes) - Same as above but with a spectacular supernatural plot, and out of this world sets. The series had a much better ending. However it was canceled 4 seasons early. Which wouldn't have been bad it they had not raised so many questions in the last 3 minutes.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Total: 145 episodes) - Yeah it got 7 season but it really started picking back up after the mid series slump. I think any fan would have loved a season or two more. Hey if Smallville and the Simpsons among others are still going, then surely Buffy would have been fine. Besides they could have had a killer season with the potentials. I would have loved to have seen Buffy Season 8 as a tv show instead. As a good note it had a great ending season and finale.
Angel (Total: 111 episodes) - The Buffy spin off with just as much heart. Another great show that had a small slump in the middle but was still great. It had one of the best finales one could ask for but it was heart breaking to see it go, just like Buffy was. It was hard to decide which show was better, but Angel opened up some amazing plots that couldn't have been done with Buffy. Smile Time anyone? Another thing that made it great was how the two shows and characters tied it together, it gave a richer experience than most shows because of it.
Firefly (Total: 14 episodes) - Yes another Whedon shows, the man is genius. Firefly is so good it has one of the most hardcore fan bases around. Enough that they got a movie and have helped charities. While a movie is good, a show needs time to develop and take it's own pace. The show was so damn good you loved it, even though pretty much none of the lingering questions were answered at the time of cancellation. It was an amazing space ride that focused on the characters. Thus making it the best "space" show I've ever seen. No fancy aliens and an over abundance of lasers and other sci fi cliches. Just solid writing that was all about humanity. Unfortunately the fans never got any answers to their questions during the show's run, or got to see any Reavers. So why is a show that some might say only got to show it's "filler" so highly regarded. Because it was just that damn good. No episode was wasted, every one showed a lot of what made these people who they were, and what they were about. So much so that you just didn't care if they ever got to answering the major questions yet. In fact I wanted them to wait as long as possible because the stuff we were getting was to good. Alas it got canceled just 14 episodes in and therefore had one the most disappointing finales. The episode was great no doubt, but absolutely nothing was answered. Just think of your favorite movie ever, then have someone cut it off on you halfway in... yeah.
Honorable Mention: The Wire (Total 60 Episode), one of the best and most engrossing shows ever. Period. It was top notch quality all the way through. It was divided into what can only be explained as chapters. Slums, Docks, Press, Government, and Schools. It was a great idea. It kept the show fresh and let you see all the different aspect of the city. Everything that makes a show great was covered. Character that ruled? Check. Writing? Double Check. Setting? Check x5. There is nothing to complain about here. It got in and out in excellent fashion. However it was just to good to see end. How could anyone not expect more quality seasons if they had kept going.
This wasn't supposed to be some sort of countdown. At first I was just going to post the names and that was it. But in the end I just needed to vent my frustrations.
