This is one that I have mixed feelings on, to be honest. The whole NWA "invasion" of WWE was a bad angle to begin with. They used a bunch of perpetual mid-carders and jobbers like Jeff Jarrett, Bob Holly, and Billy Gunn to form an NWA stable, even bringing in old NWA title belts. They tried to resurrect old tag teams like The Midnight Express or The Rock and Roll Express (am I detecting a theme?) all of which floundered pretty badly. Then they brought in Dan Severn. Now let me just state I have the utmost respect for Severn. He was one of the innovators of MMA/UFC, and from all accounts I have heard he was legitimately one of the toughest guys in pretty much the world in his prime. His UFC rivalry with Ken Shamrock was legendary at the time. But a pro wrestler, Severn was not. He had zero charisma and no fan appeal. He pretty much just stood in the ring and looked intimidating. He was brought in as a sort of "enforcer" for the NWA stable, which did not last too long after his arrival. After that, they teased repeatedly at a feud with Ken Shamrock. I have not heard if the two of them had any legit heat backstage, or if they managed to put their UFC days behind them. At any rate, they never actually had the two face off int he ring. Instead Severn had a short feud with Owen Hart and then left WWE for good. It may not be wrestlecrap in itself, but it was definitely a waste of space in my opinion. Severn just was not good as a pro wrestler. Though he did have a pretty cool entrance theme, as I recall. If anyone has a sample, please post.

He didn't do anything wrestlecrappy in his stint. He just wasn't successful. Here's his theme BTW, its pretty bad ass.

I had forgotten all about the Brawl for All, which was a mess on its own. I heard he was only in one fight, then said he had nothing to prove in it and withdrew.

I think a large part of that NWA idea was to counter a claim WCW was making that they were formerly the NWA and had rights to its tradition. A little harder to claim when the NWA is on the competition. Thing is WCW was a former NWA member (as was WWF). I think it was a good idea and definitely not WrestleCrap. Too bad it wasn't better executed.

I always thought the NWA "invasion" and the earlier ECW invasion were really Vince trying to copy the whole NWO invasion that was doing gangbusters over him at the time. WCW had hyped the NWO at first as if it was the WWF invading their territory and taking out their stars. And Bischoff seemed intent on trying to make the NWO a separate brand from the rest of WCW for a while. And Vince was just trying to copy it with two other, smaller feds that were still a known entity to fans.

That was part of it, too. But I remember Jim Cornette saying something like "Any other organization claiming to be the heir to the NWA lineage is lying." And this is right when WCW was making that claim and calling WCW a "century old tradition", naming people like Dusty Rhodes as former WCW World Champions. Strangely WCW as Jim Crockett Promotions, founded in 1931, was older than the current NWA, founded in 1948.

I might add I remember a tag match on a particular episode of RAW. They were still trying to hype the idea that Severn and Shamrock hated each other because of their UFC days. And this match pitted Severn and Shamrock off against I believe The Nation. Matches like that are not a new thing-the whole reluctant partners angle. But I remember that Severn and Shamrock did not even act like they cared one bit. They tagged in and out like they teamed up all the time, not even a dirty look exchanged.

There was a match between the two on RAW in August of 1998. I remember Owen Hart interfering in the match when the bookers were hyping up the Lion's Den match at Summerslam the following Sunday. I remember during that Summer, there was an angle between between Owen Hart and Ken Shamrock because I think Owen turned on Ken during a tag match a while before.

If they gave Dan a hawaiin shirt and a ferrari and claimed he was from "Hawaii", would he have gotten over?
Oh, and this would be his new theme.
