I have no idea what we will call this decade in the future. I think it has more to do with the turning of the dial than what actual Decade is. ALso, AD is a Regnal Calendar, a Year Zero wouldn't make sense.
Besides, everyone ought to know, that eras begin and end with events. The 20th Century began with the Great War. The 80s began with Regan's Inauguration. The 90s began with the Fall of the Soviet Union. The 21st Century Began on September 11th, 2001. Decade Bookends should be tied to important events, not oranges falling from the Sky.

This decade is called "the noughties" Actually, even the person who created that term admitted that it wasn't official and it wasn't for someone to enforce a term, but for the people to create one on their own.

The thing is, the way we refer to decades isn't the same as the way we refer to centuries. With centuries, we're actually counting off from the first century, which ran from the year 1 to the year 100. So the 21st would run from 2001-2100.
But with decades, we're not actually counting them from the beginning, just marking off a period of ten years. "The 1960s" refers to the period of ten years starting in 1960. Now, if we were talking about "the 197th decade," then we'd have to start with 1961.

I didn't know there was seriousness and all this "official" stuff when referring to decades.

Back on that whole concept of time thing. The modern concept of time, as a series of unique events determined by cause and effect, didn't really exist until the 1800s. The Monotheists would tell you time was leading up to the Day of Judgement, and the Dharmists would tell you that time was an endless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Depicitons of history in art would use modern clothing, and the Century was a company of a hundred men, not a time. It's only very recently that Time became so important to us. So that is why we don't have a name for the first ten years of the decade.
