I read stories about the characters I like. If I don't like a character... why should I spend my hard-earned cash on that character's stories? I've heard good things about the Bucky-Cap stuff... but it's just not what I want, hence me not buying the comics. Simple as.
And I have grown to like other characters. I liked Silverclaw when she was introduced. I liked Haywire for the brief amount of time I read stories about him. I liked Justice, Firestar, Scott Lang, and Jack of Hearts once they slowly began to be inserted onto the Avengers team. And I liked plenty of other characters and stories from when I picked up random comics while purchasing the stuff I read monthly. But I don't like all the stuff I loved being tossed aside just for the sake of change and shock-value.
In fact, I could have taken some of Marvel's changes a bit better if it wasn't all at once. 'Cause, seriously, when every single character I like is either dead, drastically changed, or no longer being used... then it's no longer worth it to shell out money to Marvel on a monthly basis. I have other things to spend my money on, between college, living expenses, and other hobbies. If Marvel is dead-set on putting forth something completely new, then they can do so without making money off of me every month. I'll just continue to wait until they've got something out that I like, and then I'll pick that up.

So you never once heard anything about any of the really good titles Marvel was putting out? Thor, Immortal Iron Fist, The Twelve, Avengers Initiative, New Mutants, Incredible Hercules, Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova? Seriously none of that is interessting at all?

If things hadn't have changed so drastically, I definitely would be reading some of that. I'll give pretty much anything with "Avengers" in the name a try so long as there's at least one classic team with a monthly comic, Hercules is a character I've always liked, Nova's one of those random characters whose comics I read back occasionally back in the day, Thor is always a favorite, and I've always had a soft spot for cosmic stuff like Guardians of the Galaxy. In fact, the only things on that list I wouldn't care about at all is Iron Fist, 'cause I've never given a crap about the character. and maybe The Twelve, 'cause I have no idea what that is.
Really, the stuff you listed could all be great. It could be the sort of stuff I'd add to my monthly list after giving it a test run. But if I can't read stories with the classic characters I've always loved at the same time as I give that stuff a try... then I'm just not going to bother. And at this point, it's been so long that the idea of never buying a comic again doesn't really bother me anymore.

I don't really care about progress in comics. I don't need progress in comics. I could read about Steve Rogers as Captain America from now until my death, and I'd be happy.
And like I said, I could take some of the changes made if it was a gradual thing. As long as at least some of what I loved was still around, I could take jackass Iron Man, MIA Thor, or Bucky Cap, particularly if I knew it wasn't going to be a long-standing thing. But when I run through a check-list of characters I love and they're all dead, MIA, or drastically changed... I'm content to just take the money I would have spent and go buy something else instead.

The Immortal Iron fist and Incredible Hercules do sound interesting to me, since you brought it up. I'm not terribly interested in hunting down back issues but if the issues are being collected in trade paperback I'd be quite interested in picking them up. Same goes with the most recent Blue Beetle series.

PICK UP BLUE BEETLE! Seriously was one of my favorite DC series. So of course it gets cancelled due to low sales.

It's really a good time to get back into Marvel. Steve Rogers is back, Spider-Man is no longer bogged down by a decade of sloppy writing, and Tony Stark's body is being "rebooted" for lack of a better term. Basically I'm under the impression that they're undoing all of the Extremis stuff and turning him into something more in line with the film version of Iron Man, which is cool by me. Anyhow, I'm really pumped about Rogers return and the inevitable reunion of the classic Avengers line-up. because god forbid these characters should ever grow and change *facepalm* God forbid I have my own opinion and like the traditional versions of the characters. After the hundreds of thousands of dollars I've sunk into the comic book industry, I have the right to any f***ing opinion I want.

Not sure about Hercules, but I'm sure they're being collected, and I'd love to get my hands on the sets.

Incredible Hercules is well... incredible. it's up to 4 trades now, the fifth one is coming out shortly. and of course since it's good it's getting cancelled after the next story arc. because people would rather buy shit like New Avengers or Matt Fraction's terrible x-men comic out of loyalty than try something new.

Iron Man, Thor and Cap are still basically the same guys, but it's silly to believe they should exist in some kind of vacuum where everything is perfect and nothing ever changes. how the hell are you supposed to tell a story if everything stays the same?

Well, I'm sorry to hear that a good comic is being cancelled. That won't stop me from picking up all the trades however. I've always been kinda fond of Marvel's version of Hercules after all.

They've got five separate TPBs out for Blue Beetle, covering issues 1 to 34. I HIGHLY recommend picking up Vol. 4, "Endgame". It features one of the best stories ever written for a comic, and reveals the pieces in the puzzle that the BB writers were crafting since issue one.

Or Spider-Man's reboot, which I hate, is actually a chance got him and gives him a chance to grow in different ways then he had been while married? And The New Avengers stuff has been going on since 2004, so a change even to the familiar is a change and growth because of how scenarios have developed over the last half of this decade. From the list he gave I don't really see how he's anti-growth or change, as much as it is his growth and change differs from your vision of what it should be. I'm not sure why that earns a facepalm.

Traditional versions of the characters existed for decades, and did grow and change. Again, I don't see why he's anti-development, or saying he never wants a character to change (if so he would have stopped reading comics years ago since development has been going on for decades), just a different path of it

Progress happens all the time in comics. Steve Rogers unfrozen by the Avengers is not the same Steve Rogers that considered running for president and that wasn't the same Steve Rogers that was shot in the head. The core was there, but he had been developing for decades. Do you honestly believe progress never happens in comics?

I just want to say that when it's all said and done Ed Brubaker on Cap will be seen in the same light as Chris Claremont on X Men or Frank Miller's Daredevil. Miller maybe, Chris seems doubtful. With Chris, while his best stuff was with Byrne, he still worked on X-Men for such a massive amount of time that so much of that corner of the universe is shaped by him. Right now, Cap's book has seemed to be on a much smaller scale, and doesn't seem to have to huge influence the X-Men juggernaut (not Juggernaut) became.
