This is Simon. He's a Yorkie/Silky terrier mix. He was 15 years old. We had to put him to sleep last night. He had stopped eating, the vet noticed that his liver and kidneys were getting hard, and he had virtually no muscle mass left in his back legs, so he couldn't stand very well. For the last 3 days, we came home each night to find him unable to get up, lying in his own pee. On top of that, I learned that many dogs tend to shake when they are in pain, rather than moan or cry out. We were keeping him wrapped up in blankets and had him lying on a heating pad because we thought he was just cold. This is the second time this year that my heart has been broken. So gang, I need some cheering up. Because this is not shaping up to be a good Christmas at all. Thanks for letting me vent.

God, man, I am so sorry. I completely understand the attachement we as humans get to our pets, and having had to put a few down over the years when it was obvious that nothing could be done, and it sucked every single time.
Only advice I can give you is this, weird though it may be it worked for me, if there was a spot, like a chair or something, where Simon used to hang out and just chill, maybe take tonight, grab a pillow and sleep in that spot. Weird, I know, but it did help me.
Anyway, just take it easy man, it hurts but it will get better.

I'm terribly sorry to hear that. It's no fun losing a pet.

Damn. I'm sorry to hear that. I lost a pet puppy this year too, and it's not easy. Cheer up, but don't force yourself.

I'm so sorry, Tull. So many of us here know what it's like to lose a pet we love so much. We're all thinking of you and feel free to vent some more if you want to.

I just got back from going home to bury him. The temp has warmed up enough outside for me to actually dig into the ground. I wrapped him in his favorite blanket, and took his Christmas stocking and filled it with doggie cookies and other treats to place in with him.

My most sincere sympathies for your loss. Having lost two cats this year within 24 hours and still mourning my cat of 17 years, I can say that, while it's painful now, it gets easier with time and they will always be a part of your life and you'll always remember and love them.
Prayers go with you during the holiday season.

I'm so sorry, man. Losing a pet is never easy. You gave him a good home after he was abused and in shelters, though, so his last years were happy and safe. He passed away with people loving him, and that's what really matters.

That's cool, good for you. It takes a special kind of owner to take in an older dog. I'm sure it may not seem like it now, but it seems like you gave him a happy ending. An for what it's worth it reminds me of this (Calvin & Hobbes): progressiveboink.com/ch/cal_hobb-raccoon6.jpg

I'm sorry to hear that man. One thing you can take comfort in is that you gave him a place to live that was far better than what he had before.

Sorry man. It's not a fun thing to go through but hang in there.
In terms of cheering you up...I'm hoping that someone can find the link to one of the old Luger photoshop threads because, given how Tull-y and I are two of the biggest Lugermaniacs on the board, I know this would do the trick.

Great. You reminded me of when I had to put my dog to sleep. He was really up there in age. He had problems standing up as well. He could barely walk and struggled to do almost everything. It was heartbreaking watching him try to stand up when I came home. Bless his little heart. We had him so long that I couldn't imagine life without him. He hated strangers with a passion. I knew it was the right time when he didn't put up a fight when they took him to the back. Right around my birthday too. Still can't look at a Black Lab without getting a little emotional.
