I prefer JAWS over One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Crazy, I know, but Speilberg's picture was insanely difficult to make, damn near killed him AND his leading men more than once, and turned out BRILLIANTLY for what it was intended to be. Cuckoo's Nest is an excellent film, yes. But really, how hard is it to get Jack f'n Nicholson to act insane? You just point the damn camera at him after he's done a bump of coke and yell "action!". Not to mention the other awards JAWS was robbed of, including Best Supporting nods for either Dreyfuss or Shaw, Actor for Scheider, and Director for Spielberg. NO ONE had a more challenging directing gig that year. NO ONE. /rant. Anyways, this year, I'm STILL behind Pixar's UP getting a Best Picture nom. Very few things this past year were as good, animated OR live action. Maybe if the Academy nominates a "cartoon", it'll make studios step up their games a bit. EDIT: Jeeeze! Would ya LOOK at the LOVE for Cuckoo's Nest? www.imdb.com/Sections/Awards/Academy_Awards_USA/1976It's like that movie just....like the Academy fell head over heels in love with it or something. LOOK at all those noms. And how the hell did a movie that came out in 1973 get nommed for the 76 Oscars? What the hell?

Dog Day Afternoon was robbed that year. Its a very rare Pacino performance that I actually really like.
Then again, Sidney Lumet is one of my favourite directors also.

They should just leave the 5 nominations system in place.
And as for "Oscar Bait" - producers/companies attempt to gain oscar nominations through producing high quality movies with good performances?, and then publicise them as such?
Those total and utter BASTARDS!

Sure Jaws was hard to make but when it comes down to it OFOTCN is the better film imo. Not saying Jaws isn't great because it is but it deserved maybe best director, best supporting actor for Shaw and maybe thats it. But not best film. Another year maybe but not that year.

And how the hell did a movie that came out in 1973 get nommed for the 76 Oscars? What the hell? Blue Sky was made in 1990, then its studio Orion went bankrupt. Its director died in 1991, and his movie.wasn't released until 1994. It won Jessica Lange her Oscar that year. So I suppose that's the story or something like that. ts in my top 5 movies ever, amazing film. Sure Jaws was hard to make but when it comes down to it OFOTCN is the better film imo. Not saying Jaws isn't great because it is but it deserved maybe best director, best supporting actor for Shaw and maybe thats it. But not best film. Another year maybe but not that year. Plus to some voters, better to vote a crazy Nicholson and not a giant shark movie. Alot thought Spielberg was a fluke (Fellini beat him out for a Director nod), and Jaws was a lucky fluke. Of course those people never saw his well-cut, very tight debut thriller Duel (which basically was Jaws on land). Guys, look at the 1975/76 Best Picture nominees: 1975One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Barry Lyndon Dog Day Afternoon Jaws Nashville 1976Rocky All the President's Men Bound for Glory Network Taxi Driver I mean 8 of those titles (at least) are considered among the best movies of the 1970s, and American cinema in general. Plus Barry Lyndon and Bound for Glory were pretty good too.

I'm just going to add that I thought Chicago, Milk, Brokeback Mountain, and Paul Haggis' Crash were all excellent movies and deserved every bit of praise/hype they received. Those are films I can watch over and over again.

Those total and utter BASTARDS! Then again, for every # of good movies, you get a movie like Nine (not the animated 9): a movie designed to be Oscar bait, but it has been soundly drubbed both by critics and moviegoers. It's a wonder that the movie got nominated for anything sight unseen (to some extent).
