I asked for proof. Not an editorial. Clearly, you have no qualms taking liberties to support your argument. (ex. omgz they'll all lose their jerbzzz) Straight from Conan O'Brien's wiki. "In 2004, O'Brien negotiated a new contract with NBC. As part of the deal, O'Brien would take over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno in 2009." Pointing out the fact that people will lose jobs, and money if Leno quits isn't taking liberties its the truth. All I wanted to do was point out that this whole situation is more complicated then Jay Leno having his ego hurt. Once again I'm sorry if you took offense at my original response to you.

Conan wanted the Tonight Show after doing Late Night for over a decade, and used ABC as leverage. Bob Iger was willing to give him the 11:30 slot. When Zucker found out, he agreed to give Conan the Tonight Show, and Leno begrudgedly agreed to retire. Of course, he never wanted to retire at all, and had planned to go to ABC or Fox or somewhere when his contract was up to compete with Conan and Dave. NBC didn't want Leno to do that, so they gave him 10. www.deadline.com/hollywood/jay-leno-hints-that-abc-is-in-his-future/

He did indeed negotiate that contract. But where are your claims that he "refused to sign a contract to stay at Late Night or he'd go off elsewhere." founded? That sentence surely doesn't do it. I'm legitimately curious as to where you got that information from. It's not me calling you a liar or anything, I'd just like to see where Conan said "Give me The Tonight Show, or I walk." It would paint a different picture on the situation for me.

While I don't blame Leno nearly as much as I did before, I still think he needs to hit the road.

In my opinion, it would be worse for Conan to bail on NBC than Jay Leno. Conan had been bred (once he was funny) to be heir successor to Leno. There was no permanent guest host this time to take it away from him. If he bailed and started his own show on ABC (which, as we know, would very quickly become incredibly popular) there goes NBC's late night future. What's left? Give Jimmy Fallon a few years before Leno can no longer walk? Give it to Carson Daly (who, by the way, does not exist)? Beg Jerry Seinfeld?
David Letterman would only have five years, there abouts, until he retires. Who replaces him at CBS? Either Craig Ferguson or Jon Stewart.
And Conan cultivates an audience at ABC.
And assuming Jay Leno leaves to ABC or Fox, that's five years (roughly) that Conan has to compete, and if David Letterman doesn't retire this year, he has two or three more years in him.
I think they would have been better off letting Jay leave than letting Conan leave.

I agree, the fact is Jay is getting older and they need to keep the cycle going instead of thinking Jay is the answer for everything.

So you would have walked away from a huge 40+ million dollar contract, and the chance to have a talk show during prime time that many were calling the future of television? Give me a break. But it's not like the minute Leno retired NBC came to him saying they have a great idea about making him the future of television. The minute Leno retired he started hinting at ABC, and ABC started hinting at him. It was a measure to keep him from competing, it wasn't something that brought him out of retirement. I will credit NBC with one thing. At least they kept him away from ABC. Because I'd have been burning down buildings if Leno would be cutting into valuable "Lost" time (which itself is sketchy and unstable, har har). No matter what the outcome, I just hope cooler chins prevail (okay, okay, I'll stop).

This is a huuuuge misconception in the part of the media. Basically Conan put out a statement saying he would not be willing to do a show after Leno at 11:30 but at the end he said he hoped that NBC would be able to sort something out before then. So he's still doing The Tonight Show until February 13th, where Leno's set to take back 11:30. If nothing is sorted out by then, then Conan will walk.
