Unfortunately this is nothing new for the Oscars tend to ignore foreign film performances. Even they don't, its some random weird unexplainable randomness like that utterly annoying Roberto Begilliniwhatever dude.

I mean did the great Toshiro Mifune ever get a nod? No.

I say that the award has no merit since Toshiro Mifune never got one, but Halle Berry has one.

I applaud Mr. Hirschbiegel for having a sense of humor about it and not flying off the handle about misappropriation of vision and garbage like that whenever an internet meme pops up. It's amazing what these things can do for people (ask Rick Astley that), and I can appreciate a man who can roll with it. Especially when it's hilarious. Like this one.
