I was just watching In your House 11, the one where Undertaker faces Mankind in a buried Alive match in October '96.
What happens is Jim Ross has problems with his commetator speaker and kept cutting off, and finally he had enough of it, climbed(or waddled) into the ring, grabbed the mic, says something about Vince angrily, and then announces Bret Hart is coming back, or he's going to bring him back. I thought, when i first saw this years ago, if this was a shoot, but i know it definetely wasn't, but it was so unusual as it seemed Jim Ross was acting out of character and verbally attacking Vince on the mic. This was maybe when the WWF was just starting to become less family-friendly and gearing up for the immenint Attitude era.
It was kinda funny, with it's finest moments being Ross enquiring if Vince had a little button underneath, that was cutting him up, and Lawler saying Ross sounded like he was speaking down a phone, because his sound was fading and degrading.

FAKE DIESEL FAKE RAZOR RAMONE HARD GAY O.....k. That is about the time the fake Razor and Diesel came into it, so is this what really started Jim Ross to act like this, not only for Bret Hart return but also the return of Razor and Diesel, which was a con.

I remember Jim Ross turned heel again for a split second, it seemed fueding with Bart Gunn. After JR came back from his cerebal palsy(?) in 1998, his face was still feeling the effects, and his lips were twisted to one side, and he accused Bart of laughing at his face and Steve "DR DEATH" Williams came out and gave Bart a beat-down, with JR encouraging him, looking like a heel manager. This was all build up to the Brawl-for All tournament. Wonder why that format never returned? lol

JR got in the ring on Raw in, I think, September 1996 and cut a promo on Vince about how he fired his ass multiple times. Thats also when he started promising that Razor Ramon and Diesel were returning to the WWF.
For a few months JR would continue to be a heel towards Vince on commentary. I actually liked the commentary a lot then with Vince as the straight man, and heel Lawler and kind of tweener JR.

I remember this. The strangest thing I thought was when Ross mentioned his debut in the WW(F) at WM 9 and how he told everybody that if that wasn't the greatest announcing the wrestling world has ever seen, they ought to go out and buy a copy and watch it for his great commentating. I'm sorry Jim, but you're announcing at WM 9 wasn't THAT great. I thought Heenan did a fantastic job, and Macho Man was a complete joke at ringside.
Aside from a few WWE calls, my favorite Ross commentator moment was the Sting/Rude match from the Clash of Champions where Sting lost the US Title to Rude (the one where Sting had a bum knee due to Luger "clipping" it before the match). When Rude smashed Sting with a single ax-handle from the top rope and did his little pelvis-twist to the crowd, Ross spewed out something like "oh, look at Rude's tights. They were custom-made for this very event". He made that match seem so big and so much greater than it actually was; it was like he was calling the World Series or Super Bowl. It really got you going and into the whole thing.

To be honest I don't rate JR much myself. I've always prefered the storyline style of Monsoon or the over-sell of Vince.
I agree with the earlier comment about WM9 too. JR sounded as if he was trying to commentate to a bunch of children, like some TV star who had a break from his normal job to do a special charity show for the kids. Heenan (rarely) was actually having to carry the storyline while Savage just sat there making sure every other word said on the entire show came out of his mouth.
I was disapointed Styles didn't work out as I do think WWE needs a new voice. JR's diction isn't terribly clear either and his southern accent is perhaps out of line for a company who's key audience is probably east/west coast young men.

Not to mention that when those who think wrestling is for rednecks stop on the channel, the first thing that they hear is "Slobber knocker!" being shouted in a southern drawl by a man wearing a cowboy hat.

A JR heel turn would be such a refreshing change, much better than the Jerry Lawler face turn, that's been going on since 2000. Some people say Jerry Lawler isn't as funny anymore, in my view, thats because he had more to poke fun at, as a heel, and can't understand why he just agrees with JR all the time, gets tiresome.
