Where do we vote? They should have an online poll.

If they vote Ackbar in, Lucasfilm HAS to give them permission to use him. They just have to

Sadly I can't imagine Lucas being as willing as Disney to let a school use his character (The Oregon duck is actually Donald Duck and licensed)

Urban legend around these parts is that Disney charges the University of Oregon an arm, a leg, and the first born child of every incoming freshman class in order to keep that logo.

Hmmm never knew it was that controversial. But could you imagine what Lucas would want? But I would love to see this happen, just to see the reaction from all the old alumni going "what the hell is that thing"

Ole Miss is the Runnin' Rebels, right? I can see how they might not want to have an old white southern dude with rebel flags on him as their mascot in 2010. Not the most racially sensitive mascot around. Though certainly not quite the worst, either.

I'm betting if Ackbar wins, Lucas'll go "No, you can't use him. But you can use Jar Jar Binks! Everybody loves Jar Jar Binks!"

I clicked on this thread title with trepidation, and am I glad to see that it isn't what I thought it would be. Anyway, I hope something like this happens, and they stick by their results. Unlike when Mick Foley was leading in the online poll for Time Magazine's Man of the Year and they just removed him from contention.

Sadly I can't imagine Lucas being as willing as Disney to let a school use his character (The Oregon duck is actually Donald Duck and licensed) Actually Lucas is very supportive of other people using or parodying his movies, especially Star Wars. That is why the Chad Vader guys never got sued. I'm not surprised at all that Disney charges an excess amount for a college to use Donald Duck. Disney won't even let art classes in elementary schools draw their characters. Talk about evil greedy corporation. Bart Simpson was right.

And Lucas helped the Robot Chicken guys do their Star Wars shows using actual audio from the films. And didn't he also watch a screening of Fanboys and gave his thumbs up, even letting them use sound effects from Star Wars?

I'm sorry, but no matter how awesome Ackbar happens to be (and it is a lot, to be honest) no university should use a pop culture icon as mascot unless it is something that has truly stood the test of time. Donald Duck has been around for over 75 years and still has some relevance. Awesome characters from that era or before include Daffy Duck (1937), Yosemite Sam (1945), Buck Rodgers (1928), Flash Gordon (1934), Tasmanian Devil (1954), Percy P. Percival (Peg Leg Pete) (1925, which means that he was created at least three years before any of his better known rivals at Disney), The Joker (1940), Felix the Cat (1919), Popeye (1919), Tom and Jerry (1940), Woody Woodpecker (1941), Heckle and Jeckle (1946), and perhaps The Pink Panther (1963).

^^ Can't be worse than some of the mascots out there. Or their old mascot, an old Confederate white plantation owner. And it's not like they'll be known as the Ole Miss Admiral Ackbars. They'll still be the Rebels, but a different type of Rebel.

Well someone made a strong case for Ackbar.
He's one of the leaders of the Rebel Alliance, and the Ole Miss teams are called the Rebels. It's a natural fit.
