So seeing this Green Day Takeover on FUSE got me thinking, when it's all said and done and Green Day hangs it up for good what will their legacy be?

Probably that they were one of the few, if not the only, punk rock bands that truly grew up. I wore the shit out of Dookie when I was in junior high, and International Superhits was like my modern-age White Album. Only it was a compliation that also had a DVD of all the music videos, which I also wore the crap out of. And then...Warning came, and then American Idiot came...and we heard a completely different band. It wasn't like they sold out to sound like somebody else, they just grew up and altered their sound.
That being said, 21 Guns was a bigger ripoff than Titanic: The Animated Musical.

Pretty much my thoughts. Madman Szalinski kind of said it. I would call Dookie my "White Album" though. One of the first CD's I could ever remember listening to and loving the hell out of it. But I do agree with him on the fact that International Superhits! is my favorite "greatest hits" album. There, I said it. Insomniac isn't a bad album neither. I did like that they went against everybody's will and made a darker and more punk-sounding album instead of going more to the mainstream. .nimrod isn't terrible. I could listen to better and worse albums in the history of the world. "Nice Guys Finish Last" is an incredible song. On the other hand, I wish to never hear "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" ever again. Never got a chance to fully listen to Warning, but I loved the singles, so there you go. Especially love the video for said title track. To me though, the less said about American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, the better. I mean, those albums have some good songs on it, songs I wouldn't mind hearing on the radio if I had to drive somewhere, but that's about it. I don't want to start breaking rules here.

Madman pretty much summed it up. I like their more recent work better than anything they did beforehand, but yeah. They were a sort-of rebellious teenage pop-punk band that actually grew up and started making music that got more meaningful.
I'm not saying they're the deepest band in the world, but you know what I mean.
Also, they'll leave behind a legacy of hipsters hating them for cred.

Yep,Madman summed it up about as well as I could. Green Day is one of my all time favorite bands. They(like Local H in the thread on here as well) are one of the few bands that I own every album from. Insomniac would be my favorite but I like every album. I wasn't huge on 21st Century Breakdown but I still like it better than most albums that have come out in the past year.

I'd say it depends on their next album. Because they have three cleanly delineated eras: their "punk" (and I use that term loosely) era of their early stuff, Dookie and Insomniac ... their "soccer mom music" stage of Nimrod and :Warning, and their "I'm doing my best impression of Pete Townsend" era of the last two albums. If they come out with another concept album, their legacy will be a power-pop Who-lite (and before anybody thinks I'm bagging on them, I'm a fan). If they change their sound again, their legacy will be of a band that continually shifts and alters it's sound to avoid stagnancy ... whether it be a good sound or bad is user-determined. Either way, one thing their legacy WON'T be is a one-trick pony.
Jed Shaffer ~Personally, I'd love Insomniac part 2. Still their best album, far as I'm concerned.

They were one of the few bands to survive the era of "boy bands."

As a band that decided to push its political beliefs before their music. (I'm not saying this to start a debate, and I'm sorry if it goes against the rules.)

For me personally, the band that helped me get into punk music. Through them I discovered TONS of bands, and haven't looked back.
Wasn't a fan of 21st Century Breakdown, but now they're huge globally, its hard to expect them to make another Insomniac, which is my favourite of theirs. Wonderful peice of work, that.

Billie admitted he stole that touch from bands like AFI and such though, hehehe Anyway, IMO, their legacy SHOULD be anything pre-WARNING, but in reality, it'll probably be AMERICAN IDIOT. Which doesn't bother me, as I like that album, just sometimes I miss the "good old days," LOL!

A band that was popular, changed it's sound and became even more popular yet alienated a bunch of bandwagon fans. The truth is I think more people claim to hate them because it's cool to hate them when the reality is that they are still making good music.

Being a once great band that, at some point, crawled so far up it's own ass in terms of preachiness that it got sad and ridiculous.
