For me (and I know this sounds cheap) but you have all right to say a movie LOOKS dumb based on whatever. There are plenty of movies that I think look dumb ("Despicable Me" a.k.a. "Corn Pops; The Movie" for example). Only if I have seen the movie do I officially say that it's dumb and that I don't like it. I agree with this. If you haven't seen a movie or read a book or eaten a food and yet you talk about how much it sucks, you're pretty much talking out of your butt as well as potentially depriving yourself of something that you might actually like.

I say you have to see a movie to truly hate it. If it's just the trailer, then it's just the trailer just didn't appeal to you.
Look at it this way... Have you ever seen a trailer for a movie and thought "That's going to be incredible!", then saw the movie and it turned out to be a dog turd on a stick? If that is true, then isn't the opposite also possible?

But if it's the "____ Movie" series, where almost nobody has a good thing to say about it, then I think it's fair to judge those from the trailers.

It's fair to say it looks dumb or boring or whatever but to say you don't like the movie would not be fair. I'm like that with Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and Avatar and all those movies. That stuff doesn't interest me so I can say I wouldn't like the movie but I couldn't say I hate the movie or that it's bad.

It's only not fair to hate a movie BECAUSE it's popular. That's just trying way to hard to be different and those people aren't worth talking to in the first place. I bow to you, good sir, I really hate it when I meet people who are obviously hating on a movie just because it's popular. There's also the people who genuinely didn't like a popular movie but will immediately label it the worst movie ever simply because everyone likes andd they didn't see what was so great about it. You can easily spot those guys because they seem to pick a new wors movie ever on a weekly basis. Overhyped =/= the worst of all.

It depends but I would say overall that there is no harm in seeing a movie that you don't think your going to like. I hate the "I want the two hours of my life back." As if that person has such a busy and high paced life that they were going to be doing something ground breaking in that period of time. I'm probably the wrong person to ask because I will watch ANYTHING and go into it with an open mind. I even watched Gigli ignoring all the bad reviews. Even though they were all absolutely right.
Here are some personal examples. I heard so many bad things about Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I had basically made up my mind on the movie before seeing it. But I got it for cheap and decided it was worth $5 to complete my collection. I watched it and I thought it was an alright movie. Same thing with Super Man Returns. Those movies are flawed, no doubt, but I felt like they weren't as bad as some people said. On the other side of things, I remember in '98 seeing the trailer for the new Godzilla movie with Matthew Brodrick. I was so excited to see that movie. Even though the Puff Daddy rip off of a Led Zepplin song should have been a warning. I had never been so disappointed by a movie in my life. Also, I went into all of the Star Wars prequals optimistic. And I kept being let down. You should also consider whether or not you are the target audience for a movie. I, personally, won't trash the Twilight films nor will I watch them. They are movies made for teenage girls and I am an adult male. I dislike hype as much as the next person but you really have to separate that from the reality of what a film is. I liked Juno a lot. But I will be the first to admit that the fans of that movie have built it up to a mythical standard that it just can't live up to that kind of hype. In conclusion, don't be afraid to see a movie you don't think your going to like. I'd much rather be surprised than disappointed.

Nope. Same thing with books, music, really anything.
You can not want to see/not be interested in something; but to have any sorta opinion of its value or entertainment quotient, you pretty much have to see it; at least to have any kinda valid opinion.

Genreally speaking, I'd say it's not fair to pre-judge, but it can also be a case of things "adding up". If I hate a certain director or an actor, and they're in some highly publicized film that is about a subjet I find either boring, stupid, or annoying, then that combination may make me pre-judge the film based on a combination of disliking previous works.

Here's how I look at it -- I completely and totally separate the hype from the film.
When you watch a movie, just like when you read a book or hear a particular piece of music, it's a completely and totally one-on-one interaction. It's just you and the media, and the way that it's written/performed and how it reacts with your internal chemistry. And how that reacts with you, it is TOTALLY unfair to judge it without ever having experienced it from beginning to end.
However... the hype, the media machine, your peers, all of that bullhonky, THAT you can fully and totally despise without ever having set one eye on the film. I have yet to watch Twilight, and maybe I'm missing out, maybe I really will find it a good story with well-played characters and intriguing dialog. But the unmitigated hype surrounding it builds the film to this level where I look at it and say "that can't POSSIBLY be that good." I can't stand the droves of young girls flocking to it like it's Citizen f'n Kane, and I can't stand the fact that its popularity is now driving other movies, loads of copycat / ripoff books, and I even see some new TV show based solely on the "vampires and werewolves" idea. The whole unstoppable movement feels like something that's been dumbed down and hotted up (side note: hotted is a real word? Chrome didn't give me a misspelled word squiggly. Weird!) to do nothing but get inside the hormones and pocketbooks of an almost brainwashed tween/teen/20-something female crowd.
And for THAT... I can't stand Twilight, and it's left me with absolutely zero desire to see the film or read the book. I can't judge the book or the film in any way without being a pretentious douchebag, but I can sure as hell hate the hype.

Mostly no, it's not fair. But in some instances you can make a pretty educated guess on how much you'll enjoy a movie or a piece of music. For example, I know when I see Michael Bay is doing to make another film (and I use the term 'film' loosly), I can pretty much be assured it's going to be awful.

I think it's fair as long as you judge logically and not by some stupid reason (ah, ick, it's black and white!!! etc).
Some movies, when you see their trailers, look like a total and complete piece of crap and you don't need to go spend your money needlessly to confirm it.

No because when you see a movie trailer like this for example, the chances are likely that it is going to be bad. Yeah, that pretty much killed my interest in this movie and it has Barney freakin' Stinson in it. I hated the first Sex And The City movie without seeing it but that was due to the unprecidented hype it recieved. Even the local news out here in the sticks had a story on it.

I take it the Smurfs are taken out of their homeland (whatever) and go on a "fun adventure" in NYC?
Funny how they (the studios) will spend a fortune to make a movie based on property yet change it to make it "better" and messing with what made it "great" to begin with.

I saw the trailer and tv spots for Sex and the City 2 and I swear to Buster Keaton I wanted to throw a dumbell at my television set. I don't think anyone would blame me.

On one hand, juding a book by its cover is usually bad, and I have often liked movies I thought I would hate.
On the other hand, The Human Centipede.

The Smurfs Movie is just trying to capitalize on Alvin and the Chipmunks. That movie made a lot so expect more movies like it.
I do think it is fair to look at a movies trailer or poster and say "That's a stupid idea for a movie." But other than seeing it, thats about as far as your opinion can go. Two examples from recent. Hot Tube Time Machine. I saw the trailer and say that is the laziest idea I have ever heard of. It ended up being a much better movie than it had any right to be. On the other side, I thought Macgruber would break the SNL curse. I was woefully wrong.

Re: The Human Centipede: In all fairness, real centipedes are scary enough. See Vietnamese Centipedes on Youtube. Far more scary than something that should have been dead in a day from blood poisoning.

I don't have to see Disaster Movie to know I really hate it. That's the thing and it can be for books, movies, television, and people too. Some things you can tell with the first impression you're going to hate it. Is it fair to the object/person? No, but you are most likely saving yourself some time not dealing with it. Some stuff can surprise you though.
