9. i've said this before and i stand firmly behind it. in the very beginning when Hardy was brought back he was introduced by Vince McMahon to a HUGE reaction. when Vince was leaving Hardy shook Vince's hand and then gave his promo as McMahon left the ring. what SHOULD have happened.....they shake hands, Vince goes to walk away, Hardy holds on and pulls McMahon back. Hardy gets a evil gleam in his eye and hits the Twist of Fate on his boss. it would have popped the crowd, given Hardy even more support since he was fired for something that the fans saw as not his fault and he wouldn't have had to say a word. yes it would have been very Austin anti authority, but i think it would have worked beautifully for jump starting the feud and giving Hardy a great push to the main event. That is what I was expecting them to do and was very disappointed that they did not do it that way. Following up the feud would have made a huge diffeence as well. There is a reason that Matt got the most votes in the Taboo Tuesday PPV despite the company pushing for only Rey and JBL in that spot. Had they thought ahead and had any plans for Matt after the feud the two of them could occasionally run into each other and it still be a hot angle each and every time. Instead, while Matt was undefeated on Smackdown for a long time (basically until someone got stupid and thought that he should defend Orton from getting a well deserved beating from the Undertaker), but he had no angle going on at all. The fans loved him and they did not follow through and let his heat dissipate for some damned reason.

Honestly, it made Edge and Lita the biggest heels in the company and ended Matt's best hope of being a main eventer. It worked out perfectly, in my opinion.
Seriously, not to hate on Matt too much, but he hasn't done anything interesting in years, and he can't talk at all. Also, for months and months after this was a dead issue, he kept bringing it up, because it's easy to appeal to all the teenage and 20-something loser guys in the audience through misogyny. That's what really put Matt on my least favorite wrestlers list.
Actually, you know what was interesting, now that I recall? That one Money in the Bank where Matt exploited Jeff's risk-taking to get him to hurt himself in a huge spot (against Edge, no less), and then stopped King Booker from climbing by threatening Sharmell. THAT was a good performance. Had that been the start of a Matt heel turn, it would've worked. But he still doesn't have the talking to back it up, and his moveset hasn't changed for the better part of a decade.

Nothing to add, just echoing what others have said: Matt's horrible promo. If that didn't kill it, having Edge turn Matt into his complete bitch at Summerslam certainly did. What made it worse was in the long run........Matt became a JTTS, while Edge and Lita became two of the biggest stars in the company and Edge won the title six months later. What kind of message does that send, both to the audience and to the people in the back? that the talented guy gets the main event push?

Who's the bigger joke of the WWE? Evan Bourne or Matt Hardy?
