Lately, I've been starting to feel like it's a bit overrated than it is. Don't get me wrong, I think that this match was great and was, without a doubt, a classic. But I'm not really too keen on the idea on the idea that it's one of the greatest ever. Okay, maybe ONE OF them, but weren't there better matches in the 80s or matches just AS good? I heard that Steamboat and Flair tore the house down at the Chi-Town Rumble, which I would assume means that the Flair/Steamboat match was better than Steamboat/Savage. I was only a baby when that match first took place, and the first time I watched it, I did see the video package build up for it. I can see how the feud was and did keep the fans into it.

Held up well for me. I watched it years after the fact. In my mind it's even with Flair/Steamboat Chi-Town Rumble.
It depends on what kind of matches/angles you like in wrestling. It's not exactly fair to talk about the lack of hype because even though Steamboat and Savage had a build up for their IC title feud (Savage's hot cup of coffee promo) all the interest was going in Hogan vs. Andre. Savage and Steamboat had to make the match hype when they got in the ring.
I think some people think it's the best ever because it was pure wrestling from the WWF at the height of the cartoony style filled with less athletic contests and more cartoonish behavior. While Savage and the Dragon were certainly cartoonish WWF products they put on a "pure" match, Chris Jericho says on the Greatest Superstars of the 80s DVD that it was the first REAL wrestling match he saw that blew his mind.

In a vacuum, maybe the Savage/Steamboat match was a tad overrated, but I think it was the buildup that made it special. From Savage crushing Steamboat's throat with the bell, to the questions on whether Steamboat's career was over, both men played their parts well. Savage infuriated the fans by gloating about putting their hero Steamboat away, making them cheer on Steamboat in his comeback to fight Savage and get his revenge. The payoff was made when Steamboat got the ultimate revenge by taking Savage's most prized possession in the IC title. It's not about just what happens in the ring, but the journey to get you there as well.

I've never seen the build up besides the promos right before the matches and the hot cup of coffee for Steamboat promo. I need to see this buildup.

This is their first IC title match that started the feud. Quality is kinda washed out, but I think this guy covered it well. This is the first part of about 5 and it covers the match, the encounters, and the promos leading up to their WM3 encounter.
