Right, thanks to wcwpowersite I have the player, but haven't been able to look at it yet (I plan to diassemble it and look for anything that might reveal how this video format works). If it's just a matter of the player looking for a password, or checking that the file came from a particular server before it starts, that can probably be fixed. If it's looking to download some specific item from wcw.com or wherever to make things play, we're screwed. Looking at their patent application though (yes, I am a geek, before you ask), I reckon it should be possible to make this play just using the password in the NLE file.

Sorry to say, as some form of 'protection' the player needs to get a file from wcw.com to proceed. This obviously doesn't exist any more, so we're screwed. Unless someone figures out the encryption, that is.

I guess the idea was to allow total control of what videos you could view, and when - so they could mail out a disc with maybe 6 months worth of content on it, but keep kayfabe by only allowing you to access the right matches at the right time. At least, that's my guess. Since the keys are specific to the videos, there's no way of reversing them without breaking the protection.

I'm prepared to look at the special video codec and see if there are any clues there. The player is still treating the files as MPEG-1 video, so maybe there's a way around that. What's the smallest PAV on the disk?
