Mounths ago I was in a video store and they were selling off their old VHS tapes so I immmedietly went over to the wrestling section and picked up a few tapes. One of those tapes was WCW Bash At The Beach 1999. I just now got around to watching it. Man oh man was this PPV full of wrestlecrap.
First of all, before each bout they would show a video package highlighting the events that lead up to the match. Now I don't know if this was something they added in after the fact or if they actually aired during the PPV but the editing of these things were not exactly to WWE standards. It didn't say "Last Monday" in the corner of the screen or anything so I was actually confused as to thinking the events were just NOW happening at the PPV.
After sitting through an Ernest "The Cat" Miller vs Disco Inferno dance contest I was surprised to find that the dance contest had actually taken place on an episode of Nitro and that I was now going to have to sit through yet ANOTHER such dance contest between the two! To make it even more annoying they danced to their theme songs so I had to listen to their themes 3 times each. 1 time each for their entrances and another 2 times for the dance contests. There was also a wrestling match between the 2 so that meant I had to listen to the Miller's theme again as well.
Now the following matches are not necessarily in order but here is what else this PPV contained:
RAP VS COUNTRY ELIMINATION MATCH - Konnan, Rey Mysterio Jr & The No Limit Soldiers vs the West Texas Rednecks.
I fast forwarded through this match. Gotta say it was strange seeing Rey Mysterio without his mask on for the first time in a long time. No Limit Soldiers won.
Poor Hennig.
WCW UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH - Dean Malenko vs David Flair (champ)
This was during the time that David Flair dressed as and acted like his father Ric. It was also during the time that refereee Charles Robinson was going around as the "Little Nature Boy" so you had a total of 3 Nautre Boys running around in WCW at this time. Ric Flair was the "President of WCW" and as such had apparently just given David the title. David beat Malenko.
Oh and there was an Asya sighting.
My wife was like, "So what ever happened to David Flair?" I told her he sucked and didn't deserve to be in the ring, let alone a champion.
BOXING MATCH - Buff Bagwell vs "Rowdy" Roddy Piper
This watch was refereed by "America's Judge" Mills Lane. Piper was the "Vince President of WCW" at this point in his career and as such had Ric Flair in his corner (just forget about the fact that Piper had Flair commited to the funny famr) . Bagwell wanted somebody in his corner so he announced that he was bringing out "Judge Judy . . . Bagwell".
My wife thought it was actually going to be "Judge Judy" from TV when he said it.
The match had Flair putting some "foreign substance" on Piper's gloves to try and blind Buffy. It ended when Judy Bagwell dropped a bucket of water on Piper's head and Bagwell hit Piper with a wrestling move and pinned him for a 3 count. Why Mills Lane counted a 3 count as if it were a wrestling match I'll never know.
WCW TAG-TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH - "The Jersey Triade" (Diamond Dallas Page, Bam Bam Bigelow & Kanyon) vs Chris Benoit and Perry Saturn
I actually liked The Jersey Triade stable. I ended up fast forwarding through the match anyhow. The Triade won.
WCW TV CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH - Rick Steiner (champ) vs Van Hammer
This was during the time that the Steiner brothers had reunited and were now both heels. Van Hammer was in an anti-peace gimmick. One thing I noticed (or was reminded of) was that John Cena stole Rick Steiner's "You want some? Come get some!" catch phrase. Steiner won the match.
My favorite match of the night however was easily the JUNKYARD INVITATIONAL HARDCORE MATCH. Apparently Ric Flair (as President) had banned hardcore matches in WCW so they had an unsanctioned match in a junkyard full of cars and crap. It truly looked like an elaborate game of WCW Backstage Assault (only with better graphics).
Participating in this match was Fit Finlay, Ciclope, Jerry Flynn, Hardcore Hak (Sandman), Horace Hogan, Brian Knobbs, Hugh Morrus, La Parka, Rocco Rock, Johnny Grunge (Public Enemey had apparently returned just for this match), Steven Regal, Silver King, David Taylor, and Mikey Whipwreck. Jimmy Hart was also there dressed as a construction worker for some reason.
The thing was hillarious! Most of the time the wrestlers didn't know if the camera was on them so you'd see guys just sort of walking around and other times you'd see guys standting there ready to do a move trying to figure out of the camera is on them yet. They kept doing moves into this one car's windshiled and each time you'd see the guys quickly picking glass out of their arms and hands.
Did I mention the flamming barrels? There were flamming barrels and at one point the whole place seemed to just catch on fire. Oh, and there was an exploding car too!
Hugh Morris also puts Finlay in the back of a car and then proceeds to put the car in a giant crusher with a fork lift but it was clear that Finlay got out of the car about 3 seconds after he was put in it so Morrus ends up just putting a car in this crusher for no real reason.
Another unintentionally funny thing about this is that La Parka and Ciclope were dressed in jeans and flannels. It was just weird seeing them like they were regular blue collar workers or something . . but with luchadore masks.
Finaly won when he climbed over a fence to get out of the junkyard. As the winner he got some crappy thrown together trophey. If I recall correctly, I think RD said this match had no build up so nobody ordered the PPV to see this. WCW just sprang it on the audience.
If I find the time I'm going to put this thing on YouTube someday.
Last but not least . . .
WCW WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH - Kevin Nash (champ) and Sting vs "Macho Man" Randy Savage and Sid Vicious
I absolutely hate tag team matches for singles titles! Basically if Sting (Nash's tag team partner) was to get the pin he would of been champ. It makes no sense! Wouldn't Nash rather possibly lose the title to Savage or Sid than to also possibly lose it to Sting by tagging him in?
I can't remember exactly what the situation was in WCW at this time but Nash was wearing a tye-dyed nWo t-shirt. He seemingly was the only "nWo" guy there however. It was strange seeing him as a face teamed with Sting (in an non Wolfpac setting). Eric Bishoff was on commentary for this match too and was acting as a baby face. Before the match started they showed so many clips of crap leading up to this match that I didn't have a clue as to what was going on. All I know is that they showed some of the black hummer stuff. Apparently there was yet another fake Sting involved in all of this?
The Macho Man ended up winning thanks to the help of this 3, count them, 3 women at ringside. One of which would go on to become Molly Holly.
Man I miss WCW.
